BAGHDAD -- Light snow fell in Baghdad early on Friday in what weather officials said was the first time in about a 100 years.

Rare snowfalls were also recorded in the west and center of Iraq, plunging temperatures to zero degrees Centigrade (32 degrees Fahrenheit) and even colder, an official said.

The snow in Baghdad, which melted as it hit the ground, began falling before dawn and continued until after 9 am, residents said.

"Snow has fallen in Baghdad for the first time in about a century as a result of two air flows meeting," said a statement by the meteorology department.

"The first one was cold and dry and the second one was warm and humid. They met above Iraq."

The director of the meteorology department, Dawood Shakir, told Agence France-Presse that climate change was possibly to blame for the unusual event.

"It's very rare," he said. "Baghdad has never seen snow falling in living memory.

"These snowfalls are linked to the climate change that is happening everywhere. We are finding some places in the world which are warm and are supposed to be cold."

Snow was also reported in the mountainous Kurdish north of the country, where falls are common

I grew up in this town, my poetry was born between the hill and the river, it took its voice from the rain, and like the timber, it steeped itself in the forests.--Pablo Neruda

Yesterday's Weather Advisory in Saudi Arabia:

Please be advised that weather conditions in Eastern Province are predicted to get worse up to the weekend. The weather forecast in Riyadh is as follows:

14 Jan 2008 (Tues)   -4°C (min) to 6°C (max)

15 Jan 2008 (Wed)    -7°C (min) to 8°C (max)

16 Jan 2008 (Thurs)  -8°C (min) to 8°C (max)

17 Jan 2008 (Fri)      5°C (min) to 10°C (max)

Since Khobar (City where I am living)  is in proximate distance to Riyadh, the temperature here would correspond to the temperature in Riyadh.

This proves that the Kyoto Protocol is only a piece of document.

Kyoto Protocol is an initiative of the United Nations' for countries to sign a commitment to cut their emissions of greenhouse gases between 2008 to 2012. This was rejected by the US.

This is all I can say.

I think only US and Australia rejected the Kyoto Protocol out of 137 countries.

We also don't know what hidden agenda China is keeping, considering its 50-60% production is for US.

Ya, I know it's a shame really. But hey former VP Al Gore make up for it and made a documentary about climate change which he won the Nobel Peace prize. It was pretty detailed, hoping that everyone will take it seriously now. To be honest, it's scary for the children of today.
