By Now This News: Director Ryan Coogler was briefly detained by Atlanta police in January after he was reportedly mistaken for a bank robber, according to a police report filed Wednesday.
On January 7, the ‘Creed’ and ‘Black Panther’ filmmaker handed a Bank of America teller a withdrawal slip with a note written on the back that reportedly read, ‘I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet.’
The teller misinterpreted the situation as an attempted robbery when an alert notification occurred because it exceeded $10,000. The teller then informed her boss and they called the police to the scene where Cooler was handcuffed. They also detained Coogler’s colleagues who were waiting for him in a car outside.
The film director said that ‘this situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on.’ Bank of America responded to the situation and said that they ‘deeply regret that this incident occurred. It never should have happened, and we have apologized to Mr. Coogler.’
