Puddles in the basement of a turbine building of the No. 1 reactor of a troubled Japanese nuclear power plant have been found to be 10,000 times more radioactive than water in the core vessel of a normal reactor in operation, its operator said Friday.
Some 3.8 million becquerels per cubic centimeter of radioactivity was detected in the puddles at the reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> said.
The level was almost the same as 3.9 million becquerels of the activity found in puddles in the basement of the No. 3 reactor's turbine building, where three workers were exposed to high radiation Thursday and hospitalized.
Possibly highly radioactive puddles were confirmed in the basement of a turbine building of the No. 2 reactor as well, Tokyo Electric Power said.
