Nigeria's president Goodluck Jonathan will on Sunday lead the nation's delegation to the 67th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in New York, a statement by his office said Saturday.
In addition to participating in the 67th Session of the General Assembly, the Nigerian leader's itinerary, according to the statement signed by his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, will include a scheduled meeting with other world leaders including the presidents of China, France, South Korea, Brazil, Bulgaria, Finland and Switzerland.
"He is also expected to deliver a statement to the high-level meeting on the rule of law at the United Nations Headquarters and join the Prime Minister of Norway, Jens Stoltenberg, with whom he currently serves as co-Chairperson of the UN Commission on Life- Saving Commodities for Women and Children in presenting its report to the Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon," said the statement.
President Jonathan will further hold a high-level meeting on the Nigerian Economy, together with top executives of the global oil firm, Exxon-Mobil.
His itinerary during the visit to New York will also include attending a reception hosted by United States President Barack Obama and the UN Secretary-General's event on the eradication of Polio.
The 67th General Assembly of the UN has as its main focus the peaceful resolution of international disputes, a theme endorsed by the Nigerian leader in his statement to the 66th General Assembly held last year.
President Jonathan had in his 2011 address to the General Assembly called on the international community to muster the political will to promote preventive diplomacy for the peaceful resolution of international disputes through mediation.
