DOST willing to clean algae bloom in BoracayKALIBO, Aklan, March 9 (PNA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will help the local government unit of Malay, Aklan clean the excessive algae that bloomed along the shores of world-renowned Boracay island.
Jairus Lachica, DOST-Aklan chief, told the PNA Wednesday night that they had been coordinating with the local government to clean up the algae since last month.
This resort island was put in the spotlight after several tourists complained of excessive algae bloom in its white sand beaches.
Lachica said that one of their experts, Dr. Melinda Palencia, a professor and an environmentalist from Adamson University, had presented her program to the Sangguniang Bayan of Malay town.
"Dr. Palencia invented the vigormin, a white powdery substance which she also calls eco-friendly septic system (ECO-SEP), a technology for domestic wastewater treatment," Lachica said.
The ECO-SEP is a movable and deployable septic tank system for the settling, aerobic digestion and filtration of sewage/septic water.
Lachica said that ECO-SEP was first introduced in Boracay in 2015. After its successful introduction, it became widely used in different tourists destinations in the country such as Palawan and Bohol.
"I am not sure if the local government has since then used again the ECO-SEP technology in Boracay. I will ask yet Dr. Palencia on this," he said.
As part of the process, the DOST is seeking the help of the local government of Malay for the establishment of a satellite office in Boracay so they could function well there.(PNA)
