MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) An overseas Filipino worker was killed and two compatriots injured in a mortar attack in Baghdad's Green Zone last Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday.
A report from charge d' affaires Wilfredo Cuyugan of the Philippine embassy in Iraq and Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Ricardo Endaya identified the slain Filipino as Jonasis Saguid, 32, of Paco Manila.
Saguid, who worked as a cook, sustained fatal injuries in Friday's attack inside the fortified US compound in the Iraqi capital.
“The remains of OFW Saguid are scheduled to arrive in Kuwait this afternoon and flown out of Kuwait on 3 June for the Philippines,†Foreign Affairs spokesman Claro Cristobal said in a text message.
Cristobal said the two other OFWs were injured in the attack but are now out of danger.
There was no immediate comment from the US military in Baghdad.
The Philippines has banned its citizens from going to Iraq to work, but the DFA said it was possible the victims entered Baghdad via other Middle East countries. (With Agence France-Presse)
