The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) 7 has again warned jobseekers against illegal recruiters who promise high-paying jobs abroad, but have no authority from the government to recruit workers.
POEA 7 Director Evelia Durato said job applicants should be warned, especially after one of the noted alleged illegal recruiters in Cebu was released on bail recently.
Durato said job seekers can’t help but be enticed by the recruiter’s job offer that includes an attractive salary package for a job in Canada.
The recruiter allegedly duped close to 100 job applicants, but only three lodged a complaint in court.
Durato wondered why the accused was allowed to post bail when there were three complainants, which under Republic Act 8042 or the Anti-Illegal Recruitment Law, constitutes large-scale illegal recruitment, a non-bailable offense.
She said she plans to coordinate with the law enforcement agencies in Cebu to make sure that the appropriate charges are filed against illegal recruiters caught during entrapment operations.
Based on the affidavits of the complainants assisted by POEA, the applicants paid at least P50,000 as processing and placement fee for a job in Canada, but end-up working as on-the-job-trainees in a restaurant or grocery in Singapore, while others don’t get to leave Cebu at all.
One of he complainants said she paid P22,500 to the illegal recruiter, and an additional, 1,100 Canadian dollars for a job in Canada that she never got.
When she asked for a reimbursement of all her payments, the recruiter offered to get her a job in Singapore and sent her there instead, telling her that a job is waiting for her there.
However, weeks after arriving in Singapore, she still did not have a job and was forced to come home.
