Consider a career in Podiatry!
« on: April 12, 2008, 05:32:23 AM »
A) What is Podiatry? A podiatrist?

Podiatry or podiatric medicine is a field of healthcare devoted to the study and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and the knee, leg and hip (collectively known as the lower extremity). The range of disorders podiatry can address largely depends on the scope of practice laid down in national, state, and/or provincial jurisdiction.

A podiatrist or foot doctor is a podiatric professional, a person devoted to the study and medical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower extremity. The term originated in the United States but has now become the accepted term in the English speaking world for all graduates of podiatric medical schools who have earned one of the following degrees: (D.P.M., D.P., B.Pod., Pod.B, or Pod.D.).

B) What is the scope of practice?

The differences in podiatric medical and surgical practice are determined by state law. Podiatrists are often defined as physicians in most States. Each state allows or limits the practice of podiatric medicine to the foot, ankle, and in many States, portions of the leg or related leg structures.

This may include surgery above the ankle and leg in 44 states. Most states require completion of a residency or a post-graduate training to practice. Most podiatric surgeons work in surgery centers or hospitals performing both medical and surgical treatments for patients. As in many other specialties, some podiatrists work in nursing homes and some perform house calls for patients. Podiatric patients range from newborns and infants to the geriatric.

Within the scope of practice, podiatrists are the experts at foot, ankle & related leg structures surgery. Some podiatrists have primarily surgical practices. Some specialists complete additional fellowship training in reconstruction of the foot, ankle and leg. Many podiatric surgeons specialize in minimally invasive percutaneous surgery. Most podiatrists utilize medical, orthopedic, biomechanical and surgical practices. Indeed, surgical podiatric principles rest on a base of orthopedic and kinesthetic knowledge.

C) How much do podiatrists make?

General Podiatrists make around $150,000 starting

Podiatric Surgeons make around $250,000-$300,000 starting.

Podiatric Medicine is a very interesting one. Like traditional medicine, the students of podiatric medicine learn basic histology, anatomy, biochemistry, doctoring methods, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, and podogogical treatments.

Some pictures to illustrate the field of Podiatry

Calcaneal reconstructive surgery on the distal prominence

It is important to note that Podiatric Medicine is already a specialized field of medicine and that there is close relationships between Podiatrists and Podiatric Surgeons with Orthopedic Surgeons; especially when it involves podigogical reconstructive surgery and or minimal invasive surgery in removing of the feet or parts of the foot.

Fascinating field of medicine.

When I was exploring into Podiatry last year, I was accepted into the OCPM (Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine) Professional Internship, which showed me the aspects of Podiatry.

The most amazing aspect, in my opinion, has got to be Reconstructive Podiatric Surgery .

They can literally replace and or fix destroyed regions of the calcaneal bone, and or the entire metatarsal. They use EF or known as External Fixators.

Like this:

External Fixators attached tot he lower tibia and fibula.

In this example, the patient had a severed and cracked fibula; the external fixators were placed to allow the marrow to grow and realign the damaged fibula. Within a good 2-3 weeks, the bone will heal; then the external fixators will be removed.

This procedure is called Reconstructive Fibular Surgery.

The procedure itself will cost the patient anywhere between $75,000 to $100,000.

Kuyaw kaayo ang process to install it jud 'te. They had me go into the surgical floor one time and they were literally installing it on the patient. It is amazing that the podiatric surgeons literally manipulate the blood flow. They are able to 'clip' or stop the flow of blood into the legs during surgery.

The patient, who was given Demerol, was partially analgesicized, couldn't feel anything below his hip. But he was still able to move his lower muscles, 'te.

And the leg was exposed and I could literally see his muscles costrict, release, could see the bones during duraflexion, etc.

Amazing kaayo. ABSOLUTELY amazing.

There really is nothing like Medicine.

Dong, I really have so much respect to your chosen profession kay I don't think I can ever do that, not even a bit of what you are doing.  You ask me to administer injection and I might pass out right away! hahahaha

Dong, I am not that worst.  Our eldest sister, she faints at the mere talk of medical problems.  Me, I haven't fainted but it only makes me feel a little bit woozy but I never really fainted.

Really 'te?

Okey ra man because you are a banker/businesswoman. Different talents and different strengths.

In my opinion, it takes a lion of an individual to be a banker and deal with finances and projects.

I salute you, My dear Sister!
