Can Cellphone Cause Brain Cancer
« on: May 17, 2010, 03:24:36 PM »
The largest study to date on links between mobile phone use and certain types of brain cancer has proved inconclusive, researchers say.

The results indicate a possible health risk from heavy mobile phone use, said the World Health Organisation (WHO), which conducted the study.

But it said further research was needed for more conclusive answers.

The 10-year study of 13,000 people has been criticised because mobile phone companies provided 25% of the funding.

"The study doesn't reveal an increased risk, but we can't conclude that there is no risk because there are enough findings that suggest a possible risk," the study's chief author, Elisabeth Cardis, told AFP news agency. - BBC

better to be safe than sorry, as they say.

one thing wrong with the study's methodology, as reported, was that there was an increase in the widespread use of cellphones while the study was being undertaken.  it also included the analog cell phones common in the 1990s as against the current digital ones that are more common now, which have less radiations.  these changed the definitions of the study.

also, the latency period of glioma, a type of brain cancer, is 25 years, a period longer than the current widespread use of cellphones.

what is advised though is the use of hands-free phones instead because what is worrisome is the fact that scientists cannot categorically conclude either way--- that cell phone use may or may not cause brain cancer.

(note:  i read these additional details from yahoo! news with great interest because just now i am trying to come up with good reasons on why our 8-year-old girl shouldn't have a cell phone.)
