A LIFE WELL LIVED. A FAITH BEST SERVED. Today, retired public school teacher Felipe Galon Larido officially retires as one of the accompanists and choir trainers of the Our Lady of Light Parish. He founded the Polyphonics, a local church choir, in the early '70s and served as its trainer until it became inactive in the last twenty years. He later organized another church choir composed of his siblings, neighbors and friends. (I liked the name Polyphonics so much that I used it as the name of the Holy Spirit Parish choir I co-founded in 1978 in my alma mater, the Visayas State University, formerly ViSCA, in Baybay City. Larido taught me The Lord's Prayer that became identified with the ViSCA Polyphonics for more than 40 years already. Lualhati M. Noriel)
A Tubig-Loon Award recipient as most outstanding Loonanon, Larido was responsible for the second and third places garnered by the Loon Children's Choir in the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) - Children's Choir Category in 1981 and 1985, respectively. (I witnessed the 1985 contest that was held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.)
Larido composed "Pagmaya Kristohanong Katilingban", winner of the Diocese of Tagbilaran golden jubilee theme songwriting competition, which was interpreted by his only child Maria Fe Evelyn, who earlier won the Bohol search for Yamaha Musicmate Girl, the title won by Jamie Rivera at the national level. He also won in an ASEAN jamboree songwriting contest.
It was from Larido that I first learned how a certain thing or property is described in detail for inventory purposes. Aside from teaching Music at Loon Central Elementary School, he was also the DepEd Loon District inventory officer. I worked for him every summer from 1972, when I was 12 years old, until 1977. My tasks involved receiving and inventorying returned books, laboratory equipment and other property that were lent to barangay schools for their use throughout the entire school-year. By the time I was in college, I was already quite an expert in making citations for a book or any printed material, and making inventory lists.
Larido, who turns 84 in April this year, is married to my first cousin, Maria Asuncion "Inday Sonnie" M. Robles. Because of a relatively wide gap in our ages, we siblings call them Tiyo and Tiya, respectively. Tia Sonnie is herself an accomplished teacher, singer-songwriter, literary artist and cultural worker. The couple graduated summa cum laude from their masteral studies.
Thank you and more power, Tiyo Oloy ! More years to your life and more life to your years !!!
