Sergeant Eleuterio Zulueta

He sustained four bullet wounds on the right leg at the height of the Ubujan, Tagbilaran encounter on October 22, 1942 during the Japanese occupation in Bohol. Cited for gallantry, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal by Army Forces in the West Pacific (AFWESPAC), U.S. Army.

Sergeant Eleuterio Zulueta sacrificed himself to get the machine rifle of the Japanese troopers where it was the slaying machine against the Boholano guerrilla soldiers. He stood up, went to climb the truck carrying the machine rifle, and thereupon, demolishing and extinguishing the rapid-fire rifle. Later, a Jap armed with a .25 caliber rifle shot Zulueta from under the truck hitting Zulueta’s right leg. Zulueta fell on the road. The Jap who shot him was hiding behind one of the wheels of the truck, but Lt. Nunag retaliating and eliminated the said Jap.

After the machine rifleman was terminated, Captain Salazar and his men, together with the bolo men crossed the road and positioned themselves in the site. At the Battle of Ubujan, Tagbilaran, two trucks were destroyed and more than 70 Japs eradicated.

Although, there was no records where and when Sergeant Eleuterio Zulueta was born, and generations may come and go, but his gallantry and heroic acts together with the brave Boholano soldiers and veterans remain inscribed in the pages of history in the pursuit of liberating Bohol from its invaders.
