A young Boholana lawyer has distinguished herself as the only Filipina to be conferred the degree of Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law by the National University of Singapore (NUS), one of the world's 20 best law schools.
Mercedes Fama S. Baluyot also earned the rare distinction as one of NSU's "World Scholars for Lawyers" from 56 countries.
Proud mother Francisca Baluyot, president and chief executive officer of the Philippine Gift of Life (PGOL) and provincial government consultant on health and social services, and elder sister Dr. Mary Ann Ruiz witnessed her graduation and degree conferment.
The 27-year-old lady lawyer has been connected with the Castillo, Lanan, Tan and San Jose law firm based in Makati City after graduating with honors at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law and hurdling the bar examinations in 2004.
She finished as a cum laude her UP pre-law in English and Languages.
While pursuing her NSU masteral scholarship, Baluyot excelled in the academic sessions on the common law legal system in Singapore, human rights law, international environmental law, international investment law, state building and international administration, law and economics for lawyers, international comparative law on evidence and proof, arbitration of investment disputes, and biomedical law and ethics.
Baluyot had been a consistent honor student since her elementary years at the Bohol Wisdom School here.
She pursued her secondary education at the St. Paul's College in Manila and handled the campus publication at a budding age of 12 as its youngest editor.
During the same time, Baluyot won in editorial writing regardless her being the youngest also among the competing high school publication editors in Metro Manila.
Wit is in the blood because her elder brother, Kazan, is a specialist doctor reaping recognitions in medical research.
Her brother is a UP alumnus, too. Both are third generation Baluyot products of the country's foremost learning institution and state university.
Their father, the late Col. Many Baluyot, was also a lawyer alumnus of UP while their grandfather, Ambrosio, was a pioneering graduate of the UP College of Agriculture.
Fama and Kazan still enjoy their single blessedness.
