After working late on the translation of some legal documents, I came home to a dark room with mirrors turned backwards.
My 15-year old son had just come back from a trip in Kyoto. I told him to go home straight ahead as I would be late at the office. This is our third week of father-son bonding in a single-room apartment which will be my home for the coming year.
In this short span of time, I notice that he has grown taller than me, quite a good-looking boy. Just as I thought I had already known his every quirk, I discovered something for the first time. As soon as I entered the room, I noticed that all three mirrors--a body length one, and two small bathroom mirrors --have been turned backwards and covered with towels.
When I asked him in the morning why he covered the mirrors, he said,
"Obake ga desou da mo" (What if a ghost comes out of it!)
Needless to say, he uses all three mirrors together in daylight to check his appearance.
