A father died in an accident with a steam engine as he tried to retrieve his hat.Michael Amette, 68, was a passenger on a trailer being pulled by the giant roller when the wind caught his beret.
He jumped off the trailer to grab it but smashed his head into one of the steam engine's rear wheels.
Paramedics took him to hospital where he died from his injuries.
The incident was witnessed by Mr Amette's daughter and grandchildren who were on the trailer with him.
The steam engine fanatic had been taking part in a Christmas road run on Saturday in Arlesey, near Letchworth in Bedfordshire.
Twelve steam engines and trailers, each carrying between eight and ten people, were making their way through the village at around 4-5mph when the accident happened.
Mr Amette's family said he had jumped from the trailer because he could not bear to be parted from the beret that he wore everywhere.
In a statement, the family said: "It is difficult for others to understand his motivation on the day but he was attempting to retrieve his much-loved beret. - Dailymail.co.uk
