A man found guilty of committing serial arson attack and causing millions of euros in damage last summer was sentenced to seven years in prison by a court here on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old defendant, who was known as Andre H, was charged for setting fire to a total of 102 cars, most of which were luxury sedans, on street in Berlin from July to August in 2011.
The indictment attributed his criminal
motivation to "frustration, jealousy and hatred of the society."
The judge said the criminal's "excessive aspiration for recognition" had led him to commit the crime which caused widespread fears and rumors in the capital city and posed threat to the
human life, as the flames could potentially
spread to the nearby residential buildings.
The defendant had made a full confession to all the 86 cases of arson to which the Berlin district court charged against him.
Andre H had long been laid off and barely got a stable job.
"It was such a feeling of injustice that people can afford such expensive cars while he has only to be stuck in debt," a lawyer was
quoted as saying in referring to his criminal motivation.
