Dead Whale in Florence, Oregon

On November 12, 1970, the quiet coastal town of Florence, Oregon, was confronted with a peculiar and pressing dilemma: an 8-ton gray whale carcass had washed ashore, stretching more than 13 meters in length. As the massive creature decomposed under the autumn sun, the unbearable stench spread through the town. Burying it was impossible, towing it back to sea was too risky, and leaving it was out of the question, as scavengers gathered and the bloated body threatened to burst. Local officials, under growing pressure, were forced to find a solution—and quickly.
The answer they settled on was as bold as it was unorthodox: dynamite. With the idea that a massive explosion would send the remains out to sea for nature to finish the job, engineers carefully placed nearly 450 kilograms of explosives beneath the whale. Dozens of curious townspeople turned up to watch the spectacle, while reporters filmed what was expected to be a clean, efficient solution. There was anticipation in the air, a sense that Florence was about to witness a strange kind of history in the making.
When the charges were detonated, however, the result was chaos. Instead of launching into the ocean, huge chunks of whale blubber shot into the sky and rained down on the beach, scattering the horrified spectators. One massive slab demolished a brand-new Buick parked nearby, while the acrid stench of rotting flesh intensified. To make matters worse, much of the whale still remained, shredded across the sand rather than removed. What was meant to be a clever fix instead became one of the most infamous civic blunders in U.S. history, later immortalized in television footage and remembered as the day Florence learned the hard way that dynamite and dead whales don’t mix.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. - John 3:16-18
