CILICE

Etymology

From French cilice, from Latin cilicium (“clothing made of goatskin”), from Cilicia where it originates from.

Noun

cilice

1.    A hairshirt.

2.    (chiefly in Opus Dei) A leather strap studded with metallic barbs that cut into flesh as a constant reminder of Christ's suffering.

A cilice was originally a garment or undergarment made of coarse cloth or animal hair (a hairshirt) used in some religious traditions to induce some degree of discomfort or pain as a sign of repentance and atonement. In more modern religious circles, the word has come to simply mean any device worn for the same purposes. --Wiki
