Title: Bizzare
Post by: hofelina on January 01, 2009, 07:20:03 PM
Did a former Beverly Hills doctor use the fat he liposuctioned out of patients to fuel his car?

The odd accusation was allegedly made in lawsuits filed by former patients and unearthed by Forbes.com this week.

Unfortunately, if he was in fact fueling his car with fat, the practice was illegal, according to California state health officials.

An investigation has been launched by the California public health department into the now-closed liposuction practice of Craig Alan Bittner, who once claimed on a Web site that he created "lipodiesel" from his patients' fat and used it to power his Ford SUV and his girlfriend's Lincoln Navigator, Forbes.com.

California law apparently forbids the use of human medical waste to power vehicles.

Bittner's practice, Beverly Hills Liposculpture, closed in November.

Several former patients have filed lawsuits against the doctor, claiming he allowed his unlicensed girlfriend and an assistant to perform procedures, causing mistakes that left the patients disfigured, attorney Andrew Besser, who represents three of the former patients, told Forbes.com.

Wife sets fire to man's penis

05/01/2009 14:05  - (SA)
Sydney - An Australian woman who allegedly set fire to her husband's genitals because she believed he was having an affair appeared in court on a murder charge on Monday.

After the fire spread through the family home, Rajini Narayan, 44, told neighbours she had only wanted to burn her husband's penis "so it belongs to me and no one else", prosecutors said.

"It's just his penis I wanted to burn, I didn't mean this to happen," she was quoted as saying, the Adelaide Advertiser reported.

Prosecutors said Narayan's engineer husband Satish was asleep in their double-storey Adelaide home when his wife doused his genitals with methylated spirit and set them on fire on December 8 last year.

The blaze spread when he jumped out of bed and knocked over the bottle of spirits, causing about A$1m damage to the house and a neighbouring property, the court heard.

Narayan, 47, died in hospital last week.

His widow was remanded in custody until Friday, pending

"Hell has no Wrath like a lovers Scorned"

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A woman set fire to her ex-husband's penis as he sat naked watching television and drinking vodka, Moscow police said Wednesday.

Asked if the man would make a full recovery, a police spokeswoman said it was "difficult to predict."

The attack climaxed three years of acrimonious enforced co-habitation. The couple divorced three years ago but continued to share a small flat, something common in Russia where property costs are very high.

"It was monstrously painful," the wounded ex-husband told Tvoi Den newspaper. "I was burning like a torch. I don't know what I did to deserve this."

Meet Yoda, a household pet born with an extra pair of ears.

Chicago, Illinois, couple Valerie and Ted Rock took the cat in two years ago after they visited a local bar, where a group of drinkers were handing the animal around and making fun of him.

Since being adopted by the Rocks and after getting his picture posted on the Internet, the two-year-old feline has become an international media celebrity.

The Rocks have received calls from Good Morning America, Fox News and The Tyra Banks Show. The moggy's mugshot has graced the pages of the London Guardian and British tabloids.

Despite his strange appearance, Yoda - named after the pointy-eared Star Wars character (pictured below) - is a perfectly normal and affectionate cat and a delight to have around.

His extra ears are thought to be the result of a genetic mutation.

But Yoda's owners are keeping a close watch on their much-loved pet. They are concerned he could be catnapped because he is so different.

Tree Man who grew 'roots' offered hope of new life by doctor

Above: Dr Anthony Gaspari believes that he has diagnosed Dede's rare condition. Below: Dede with his teenage daughter. He fears that his children may also become infected

An Indonesian fisherman who is "half man half tree" has been offered new hope of recovery by an American doctor - and Vitamin A.

32-year-old Dede, who lives in a remote village in Indonesia with his two children, feared that he would be killed by the tree-like growths that cover his body.

Known locally as 'Tree Man' his condition has baffled local doctors for 20 years.

He has root like structures growing out of his body - branches that can grow up to 5cm a year and which protrude from his hands and feet, and welts covering his whole body.

In an attempt to earn a living to support his family, he is part of a circus troupe, displaying his Tree Man limbs along with others afflicted with skin deformities in 'freak' shows.

The former fisherman was the subject of a documentary "Half Man Half Tree", part of the "My Shocking Story" series on Discovery Channel TV.

Dede's story began when wart-like "roots" started growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident. The medical world was completely baffled.

The welts spread rapidly across his body and soon he was not able to carry out ordinary household tasks.

Dede was sacked from his job and deserted by his wife. He has been raising two children, now in their late teens, in poverty. He is resigned to the fact that local doctors have no cure for his condition.

To try to support his family he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience along with victims of other peculiar diseases.

While he has the support of his extended family, he has frequently been a target of ridicule and abuse in rural fishing village where he lives.

But now new hope has emerged for Dede after an American dermatology expert flew out to his home village south of the capital Jakarta.

Dr. Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland claims to have identified Dede's condition, and has proposed a treatment that could completely change his life.

Following the testing of samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Dr. Gaspari says his condition is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This is a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers.

Dede's problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system. This means his body is unable to contain the warts.

According to Dr. Gaspari, the virus was able to "hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells", instructing them to produce huge amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as "cutaneous horns" on both his hands and feet.

The doctor became involved in the case through the Discovery Channel documentary, and he is convinced that Dede's condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been demonstrated to stop the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV.

Dr. Gaspari said that Dede's warts should reduce in size to the point where he can use his hands. He said he had never seen anything like this in his entire career.

Vampires that really do drink blood!

Vampire bats really do drink blood. They feed on the blood of birds, cattle, horses, and pigs ... and the occasional sleeping human.

They need to consume a few tablespoons of blood every day. If the vampire bat doesn't eat for more than a few days it will starve. They can only be found in Central and South America.

Irish writer of horror tales Bram Stoker was so fascinated by these bats that drink blood, that he incorporated them in his book 'Dracula.'

Top ten sex tips for men
Teeth brushed, condom on, socks off? The London Times has revealed a list of top ten sex tips for men.

1. Men aren't irresistible and not all women are desperate for sex. Good lovemaking starts long before you reach the bedroom, so before any date, have a bath. Everyone smells: some women like the smell of male sweat, others don't, but no one likes the smell of stale sweat. Watching steaming movies can help things along.

2. Sexual gymnastics are often distracting. Chopping and changing positions and techniques can make a woman's sexual excitement plummet.

3. Thrusting for hours without climaxing doesn't make you a stud muffin. It does make her numb and sore.

4. Don't assume your partner is comfortable in her own skin. A survey of 3,500 British women, by the bathroom equipment company SHUC, found that one woman in ten feels so embarrassed about her body that she turns the lights out before taking off her clothes. The average woman still spends a lot of time every day beating herself up about her weight and looks. Nakedness increases that vulnerability, so be sensitive to her insecurities and, if you think that your partner looks great, for God's sake tell her.

5. There's more to sex than pushing the right button. Men have discovered that the key to female orgasm is clitoral stimulation, and many now rub the lamp rather than poking around inside it. The upside is that women are climaxing more often but the increase in emphasis on genital manipulation has made for some very mechanical sex. Going straight to the erogenous zones is the equivalent of fast forward. Men who focus on left breast, right breast, genitals, reduce their partner to a set of body parts.

6. Be polite. Never nudge your partner's head towards your nether regions. During fellatio don't thrust into your partner's mouth, don't hold the side of her head - and definitely warn her when you think you are going to come. With regard to orgasm, always operate a ladies-first policy.

7. Make certain that your partner knows how attractive you find her by paying as much attention to kissing her, complimenting her and generally spoiling her. Don't neglect the breasts and other erogenous zones.

8. Though clitoral orgasm is easy to achieve, most women want to experience penetrative orgasm. Intercourse is the ultimate connection between man and woman and the sensation of fullness that it creates is intensely pleasurable.

9. Women are slow burners. They take longer to become aroused and get as much pleasure, if not more, out of tenderness, kissing and cuddling. Though quickie sex has its place, for women on the whole, the longer sex takes, the better it feels. If arousal is allowed to build gradually, it floods the whole body rather than being confined to the genital area and a delayed orgasm is infinitely more powerful than an orgasm induced by five minutes of digital manipulation.

10. Put a little X in your sex. Watching steamy movies with your partner will increase the chance of some how's-your-father.

Thumbelina the world's smallest horse
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3356/3184108551_18217ed188_m.jpg)

She may be small, a mere 17 inches and weighing only 60 pounds. But she is all horse.

Born as a dwarf to a miniature horse, Thumbelina is officially the world’s smallest horse.

She may never aspire to be a champion show-jumper – she is so tiny she would find it hard to jump over a bucket.

But these things matter little to the feisty Thumbelina, who has been officially recognized as the world’s smallest horse.

That title was conferred on her in 2006 when the five-year-old entered the Guinness Book of Records.

The real-life My Little Pony was born on an American farm to a couple who specialize in breeding miniature horses.

Normally these horses weight about 250lb and rise to a height of 34 inches when they are fully grown.

But from the day she was born it was clear that tiny Thumbelina would never grow to that size.

She weighed in at only 8lb – the size of a new-born baby - when she was born. Eventually she grew to just 60lb.

Her amazing size has been explained as dwarfism. This makes her a miniature of a miniature.

She may be a mini-horse, but small means beautiful as far as her owners, the Goessling family in Goose Creek farm in St. Louis, are concerned.

She likes to hang out with the cocker spaniels rather than the other horses on their 150-acre farm.

“When she was born, she was so small we thought she wasn’t going to make it. She looked very ill. We feared the worse.

“Because her legs are proportionally smaller than her body and her head, she has to wear orthopaedic fittings to straighten them out a lot of the time.

“But we love her and wouldn’t want her any other way,” said Michael Goessling, whose parents Kay and Paul bred the miniature horses.

She only measures up to the shins of the normal-sized horses in the paddock.

Michael’s parents have bred hundreds of miniature horses, but they have never had one as small as Thumbelina. She has become something of a celebrity in her home town in America.

She lives on a cup of grain and a handful of hay, served twice a day.

She is expected to live to the age of 17 years because of her size – normal horses live for about 35 years.

“She was just a complete fluke and we call her a mini mini. She is too precious to sell. I think my parents would sell me before they part with Thumbelina. She has that special Wow factor, which you only get when you see how small she really is,” said Michael.

While she has the ability to get pregnant and give birth, the Goessling family have decided not to allow this to happen.

There could be complications during the pregnancy, they believe, so it is better to avoid the risks. And also they don‘t feel it is right that the gene which creates dwarfism in horses be carried on through future generations.

Body Worlds (German title: Körperwelten) is a traveling exhibition of preserved human bodies and body parts that are prepared using a technique called plastination to reveal inner anatomical structures. The exhibition's developer and promoter is a German anatomist named Gunther von Hagens, who invented the plastination technique in the late 1970s at the University of Heidelberg.

Plastination is a technique used in anatomy to preserve bodies or body parts. The water and fat are replaced by certain plastics, yielding specimens that can be touched, do not smell or decay, and even retain most microscopic properties of the original sample.[1]

Naa pod yata na dire, Manay, but I don't think that warning matters to the smokers.  I have uncle who died of lung cancer due to smoking.  What a waste of life.  I am just so happy that my Dad stopped smoking after my uncle (my Dad's younger brother), in his deathbed, talked to my dad to stop smoking.  My Dad just went cold turkey after that.  Hadlok diay pod sya. ;)

I remember sa una mangayo akong mga manghud na bugoy ug money para palit sigarilyo, sus ma HB jud ko.  I always tell them, ka maayo ninyo noh, sunugon lang ninyo akong kwarta'ng hinaguan!

January 18, 2009--An oddity among oddities, this newly discovered carnivorous sea squirt traps fish and other prey in its funnel-like front section, scientists announced today. Most of the 2,000 or so known sea squirt species are filter feeders that strain plankton from seawater.

Tethered to the seafloor 13,143 feet (4,006 meters) underwater, the 20-inch (50-centimeter) sea squirt, or ascidian, is one of the deepest-dwelling animals ever found in Australia. The new species is one of many new deep-sea creatures discovered on a recent expedition that used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) near southern Tasmania, Australia.  National geographic news

They belong to the Karen tribe. A bronze ring is placed one at a time till the neck is totally distended.

The Karen (Burmese: : kayin lu myo:), self-titled Pwa Ka Nyaw Po or Kayan, and also known in Thailand as the Kariang (Thai: ) or Yang, are an ethnic group in Burma and Thailand. The Karen make up approximately 7 percent of the total Burmese population of 47 million people.Wikipedia

The Karen have fought for independence from Burma since 31 January 1949. Consequently, 31 January is recognized amongst the Karen as Karen Revolution Day . In 1938 the British colonial adminstration recognised Karen New Year as a public holiday.

Landing near to God!

A car has skidded off the road in eastern Germany and landed on the roof of a church.

Police said the vehicle was travelling at high speed when the collision happened in Limbach-Oberfrohna on Sunday.

The 23-year-old driver missed a bend in the road and drove through a railing before careering up an embankment and flying 35 metres through the air.

Emergency workers had to free the man who was taken to hospital in a serious condition. BBC

Bizzare Babies
World's Smallest Baby : Amillia Taylor was born at 21 weeks and six days. No baby born at less than 23 weeks gestation had ever survived, but 10 ounce Amillia was able to pull through (and even was trying to breath and cry on her own at birth). Hospitals had initially hoped to release her yesterday, but decided to keep the now healthy baby a few extra days for observation.

Her mother doesn't mind the wait, she's just proud and happy that Amillia is healthy: "Even though she's only four pounds (1.8 kilos) now, she's plump to me."

44 pound Baby : This baby born in Iran six months ago, currently weighs an enormous 20 kilos (44 pounds)! The parents say the baby was born a normal weight close to 8 pounds when he was born, but he keeps eating every hour. The Iranian doctors do not know what this eating disorder is or where it came from.

Frog-like Baby : this bizarre-looking baby was born in Charikot, the headquarters of Dolakha district, attracting a huge number of onlookers to witness the astonishing sight.

The neck-less baby with its head almost totally sunk into the upper part of the body and with extraordinarily large eyeballs literally popping out of the eye-sockets, was born to Nir Bahadur Karki and Suntali Karki at the Gaurishnkar Hospital in Charikot. The Karki couple is a permanent resident of Dolakha's Bhirkot VDC.

The bizarre baby, however, died after half an hour of its birth, Suntali, the mother, informed. It was taken to the hospital after its death. The news about such a baby being brought to the hospital spread like wildfire and there were hundreds gathered at the hospital to have a look. The police had to be deployed to control the crowd.

The baby weighed 2kg at birth and was born after the normal nine-month gestation period. Suntali, already a mother of two normal daughters, was not suffering from any illness during the pregnancy. Nir Bahadur, the father, says he does not feel any remorse for the newly-born baby's death. "I am happy that nothing happened to my wife," he said.

Note : The baby has a condition called anencephaly, a neural tube defect (like the cyclops baby), with no proper brain formation. The baby would have died a few days later. That's why women are advised to take folate in early pregnancy.

Baby with Three Arms : This 2-month-old baby named Liu Junjie from Anhui Province, China, was born with a third arm on 2006. Doctors successfully removed the extremely rare and well-developed third arm, but the baby required long-term physical therapy to gain function in his remaining hand, which has no palm and flexes in either direction. "We're hoping to exchange information with doctors who've dealt with similar cases anywhere in the world," said Chen, head of the orthopedics department at Shanghai Children's Medical Center. "This is so rare that we have virtually no information to go on.

A Broken Penis: Facts About a Real, Debilitating Condition
January 07, 2008 by

Though the penis does not contain a bone, a penile fracture - or broken penis - can easily occur in certain situations.

According to Sheldon Levine, D.O., of Orland Park, Illinois, there are about 1,000 cases of broken penises reported each year. In most cases, a broken penis occurs during sexual intercourse.

Q. If there is no bone, what breaks in the penis?

A. According to Dr. Levine, the penis contains ligaments and cartilage. Although there is no bone, a penile fracture occurs when the ligaments are torn. This is just as painful as a broken bone.

Q. How does a broken penis occur?

A. Dr. Levine states that in most cases, the penis breaks during sexual intercourse when the penis is fully erect. At full erection, the penis is the most vulnerable. If, during this time, it hits an immovable object, or a hard object, it can break just like an arm or a leg. In most cases of a broken penis, it occurs during sexual intercourse while the woman is on top of the man.

Q. How will I know if my penis is broken?

A. You will know. The first thing you will hear is a snap. Then you will feel pain that you have never before felt. You may even experience blood. Although the penis is broken, it will not break off, according to Dr. Levine. Of all the cases of a broken penis, there is no single incidence of a penis breaking off.

Q. What do I do if my penis breaks?

A. Get thee to a hospital emergency room and fast. Years ago, ice packs and pain killers were the remedy of choice. This often left men with either a penile curvature or impotence. Today, simple surgery will repair the torn ligaments and you will be good as new in a few weeks, says Dr. Levine.

Q. How do I avoid a broken penis?

A. The only way you can avoid this condition is to curtail your sexual intercourse or be extremely careful. This may put a severe damper on your sex life. As there are only 1,000 reported cases of broken penis each year, you are better off to go about your business and not worry too much.

Marco Evaristti (born 1963 in Santiago, Chile), is an artist who has lived in Denmark since the 1980s.[1]

After studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Evaristti gained notoriety for a museum display entitled Helena in 2000 that featured ten functional blenders containing live goldfish. The display, at the Trapholt Art Museum in Kolding, Denmark, invited guests to turn on the blenders. This led to museum director Peter Meyer's being charged with and, later, acquitted of animal cruelty.

Evaristti's next major work, in 2004, entitled Ice Cube Project, was to paint the exposed tip of a small iceberg red. This took place on March 24, in Kangia fjord near Ilullissat, Greenland. With two icebreakers and a twenty-man crew, Evaristti used three fire hoses and 3,000 litres (790 US gallons) of paint to color the iceberg blood-red. The artist commented that, "We all have a need to decorate Mother Nature because it belongs to all us."

On January 13, 2007, Evaristti hosted a dinner party for his most intimate friends. The main meal was agnolotti pasta that was topped with a meatball made with the artist's own fat, removed earlier in the year in a liposuction operation.[2]

On June 8, 2007, Evaristti draped the peak of Mont Blanc in France with red fabric, along with a 20 foot pole with a flag reading "Pink State". He was arrested and detained on June 6 for attempting to paint the peak red. His aim is to raise awareness of environmental degradation.[3]

Marco Evaristti, a renowned shock artist served up some interesting meatballs to his friends as of recent. He prepared 48 meatballs with fat from his own body from a liposuction procedure he underwent last year. “The question of whether or not to eat human flesh is more important than the result,” he said, explaining the point of his creation. “You are not a cannibal if you eat art,” he added. Some of his earlier piece’s include inviting people to kill fish by pressing the button on a blender where the fish were held, as well as in April 2004 he dyed an enormous iceberg in Greenland with red paint. Bizarre and unethical to some as it may seem he cooks in the name of art, and you can enjoy his art by dropping a cool $4,000 to pick up 10 human fat cooked meatballs to throw on your spaghetti.

Although to many outsiders, the concept of "clothing" on Muslim women suggests full-body veils, many married women in Syria are decidedly more playful, feeding a market for daring and quixotic underwear (to be worn in private, of course, and only for one's husband). Musical panties (some that glow in the dark), bras with "hands" covering the cups, and underwear designed to collapse and fall to the floor at the sound of hands clapping are just three of the popular items at boutique shops, according to a December BBC News dispatch from Damascus. You’ve read about the weirdest home remedies, and you know about some of the strangest diseases to plague humankind. But the positively implausible treatments of yesteryear deserve a mention also. Here are just a few bizarre outdated home remedies that are virtually guaranteed not to work. These are all real folk remedies that have been used at one time or another. (In case you’re wondering, we don’t endorse or condone the actual use of any of these treatments.)

Croc Bites Off Hand

Kaohsiung, Taiwan, April 11, 2007—Armed and dangerous, a Nile crocodile prowls the Kaohsiung, Taiwan, zoo (top) on April 11, 2007. Veterinarian Chang Po-yu was reaching through iron bars to remove tranquilizer darts before treating the 440-pound (200-kilogram) reptile when the inadequately sedated animal bit the vet's forearm off.

But for the vet, it wasn't quite a farewell to arm.

After being shot at twice, but apparently unhit, the croc dropped the arm. After seven hours of surgery, doctors successfully reattached the appendage, shown at bottom on a smiling Chang on April 12.

The largest African crocodile species, the Nile croc may be threatened in some parts of its range, according to the World Conservation Union. The reptiles can reach 16 feet (5 meters) in length and are estimated to kill 200 people a year.

Werewolf boy appeals to doctors to find a cure
 Thatsweird.net

An 11-year-old "werewolf" boy who desperately seeks a cure for his condition is baffling medical experts.

Pruthviraj Patil is one of 50 in the world who suffers from hypertrichosis, a rare genetic condition known as Werewolf Syndrome.

As a result his face and body is covered in thick, matted hair.

But he is hoping doctors will one day find a cure for his ailment.

Born in the Indian district of Sangli, near Bombey, he hardly ever leaves his village because of his fear of being traunted by strangers.

The only parts of his body that are not covered with hair are the palms of his hands and soles of his feet.

The son of a well off farmer, his parents have tried homeopathy, traditional Ayurvedic remedies and laser surgery. But none of them have worked.

It is believe his genetic condition was caused by a flaw during pregnancy.

"Why did God do this to us," his 32-year-old mother Anita pleads. "He looks so odd and whever we go people throng to see him."

Plastic surgeon Vinay6 Saoji has examined the boy and confirms that the condition is very rare.

"Hairy nevus, where a person has patches of excess growth, or hirsurism, is not uncommon, but hair persisting all over the body is very rare," he added.

Pruthviraj says he is anxious to get the hair removed but even after laser treatment it simply grows back.

The doctors don't have any answers to his predicament.

When he first went to school he said he got bullied and the other children laughed at him. But now they have got used to him and they treat him like normal.

He appealed to the doctors to help find him a permanent cure.

Fish that could walk!

Classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List 2007

Description
The spotted handfish is one of the world's most endangered marine fish. This extremely distinctive fish is almost pear-shaped and unusually, has hand-like 'paired fins' that enable it to 'walk' along the seafloor ; both the pectoral and ventral fins are used in this locomotion (4). When swimming through the water, the unpaired or 'median' fins (such as the tail and anal fin) are used (4). These fish are cream in colour with a myriad of dusky brown, and occasionally yellow-brown spots (4), the pattern of which is unique to each individual (3). Some individuals also have orange markings on their fins. Handfish have a small lure just above their mouth, the function of which is unknown but does not appear to be used to entice prey .

Fish that could walk![/b]

The real blue man

Incredible as it seems, this is not paint or some elaborate tattoo. Karason's condition is a very rare, but medically recognized one: Argyria. It's a form of silver toxicity that comes from Paul's homemade treatment for another skin condition, dermatitis, that began to trouble him shortly before his transformation began. He drinks a potion of colloidal silver to keep the dermatitis at bay, but the side effect leaves his skin with its fascinating tinted shade.

Colloidal silver was once used as an antibiotic before penicillin became widely available, and seems to be treating Paul's other problem effectively. The elixir, made by using an electric current to strip silver atoms off a piece of metal and force them into a water-based solution, is rarely harmful; the Argyria is usually a benign side effect; one Paul is prepared to live with until the end of his days. The color change comes from the interaction of the silver particles with light; much like photographic paper, which often contains silver for this very reason, it darkens with exposure.

However, society has been less than understanding. Paul was forced to relocate to Madera, California this year in order to find a place to live that's more accepting of unorthodox personal lifestyle choices. Still, even in California, the state famed for tolerance, Paul may be hard-pressed to find people who will live up to the modern social credo, that all people are equal, no matter the color of skin.

In a recent interview, Paul said: "I hope that they just accept me, and I think that will happen here. Where I was, I rather doubt it would have. This is a different kind of community here."

A BUSINESSMAN who lost his mobile phone on a beach was amazed when it turned up — in the belly of a massive cod.
Andrew Cheatle thought his Nokia handset had been lost at sea after it slipped from his pocket.

Lost and found ... mobile phone
But a week later his girlfriend’s mobile rang and it was fisherman Glen Kerley saying he’d found the phone in a 25lb fish.

Andrew got the handset back, dried it out — and amazingly it still works.

Andrew, 45, said: “I was messing about with my dog and my phone must have fallen out and been swept out in the swell.

“I kept calling it but I gave up hope after a couple of days.”

He was shopping for a new phone with girlfriend Rita Smith, 33, when her mobile went off.

She told him: “Your old mobile number is calling my phone.”

Andrew continued: “She said some guy was going on about my phone and a cod so she handed it over to me and he told me where he had found it.

“I thought he was winding me up but he assured me he had caught a cod that morning and was gutting it for his fish stall and that my Nokia was inside it — a bit worse for wear.

“I didn’t believe him but went to meet him and found it was my phone — a bit smelly and battered — but incredibly it still worked after I let it dry out.”

Trawlerman Glen, 45, had tried to use the phone but it didn’t work. So he took out the SIM card and put it in his handset to try to trace the owner.

Glen, of Worthing, West Sussex, said: “Cod are greedy fish — they’ll eat anything. They have big heads and big mouths.

“I’ve found plastic cups, stones, teaspoons, batteries and I’ve also heard of someone finding false teeth in one.

“This fish was about 25lbs and about 4ft long — not unusual but bigger than average.

“I know what it’s like to lose your phone. It can be really frustrating. So I thought I may as well make a few calls to see if I could get it back to him.

“It was a bit smelly but I was glad to return it.”

Andrew — who runs an online retail company — still uses it.

He said: “It was working but it kept playing up so I had to get the circuit board changed in the end. But now it’s fine. I know it sounds a fishy tale but it is 100 per cent true.” The Sun

The odd looking fish, which has rare, forward-facing eyes like humans and a secretive nature, was first spotted a little more than a year ago in the busy harbor of Ambon Island, Indonesia.

According to University of Washington's (UW) Ted Pietsch, Psychedelica is an apt name, given the absurd way the fish swim, some with so little control that they look intoxicated.

Members of Histiophryne psychedelica, or H. psychedelica, don't so much swim as hop.

Each time they strike the seafloor, they use their fins to push off and they expel water from tiny gill openings on their sides to jettison themselves forward.

With tails curled tightly to one side, which surely limits their ability to steer, they look like inflated rubber balls bouncing hither and thither.

While other frogfish and similar species are known to jettison themselves up off the bottom before they begin swimming, none have been observed hopping.

It's just one of the behaviors of H. psychedelica never observed in any other fish, according to Pietsch, UW professor of aquatic and fishery sciences and curator of fishes at the UW Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.

Adults of H. psychedelica are fist-sized with gelatinous bodies covered with thick folds of skin that protect them from sharp-edged corals as they haunt tiny nooks and crannies of the harbor reef.

Fins on either side of their bodies have, as with other frogfish, evolved to be leg-like, and members of H. psychedelica actually prefer crawling to swimming.

The species has a flattened face with eyes directed forward.

While other anglerfish change their coloring depending on the environment, the new species appears to maintain its wild striping no matter the surroundings.

The coloring led co-author David Hall, a wildlife photographer, to speculate that the fish is mimicking corals.

DNA work has revealed that H. psychedelica joins two other species in the genus Histiophryne, though the other two are very drably colored in comparison. newkerala.com

This is probably the first documented sighting of an albino elephant in northern Botswana.

"We have been studying elephants in the region for nearly 10 years now, and this is the first documented evidence of an albino calf that I have come across."

He said that the condition might make it difficult for the calf to survive into adulthood.

"What happens to these young albino calves remains a mystery," said Dr Chase.

"Surviving this very rare phenomenon is very difficult in the harsh African bush. The glaring sun may cause blindness and skin problems."

However, he told BBC News that there might be a ray of hope for the pink calf as it already seemed to be learning to adapt to its condition.   I have learned that elephants are highly adaptable, intelligent and masters of survival

Dr Mike Chase, Elephants Without Borders

Dr Chase explained: "Because this elephant calf was sighted in the Okavango Delta, he may have a greater chance of survival. He can seek refuge under the large trees and cake himself in a thick mud, which will protect him from the Sun. BBC

Unusual pink Iguana.January 5, 2009—A new species of Galápagos iguana has scientists tickled pink.

The pink iguana, named after its salmon-colored skin, lives only on the Wolf volcano on the island of Isabela.

Charles Darwin did not visit the volcano on his travels to the Ecuadorian island chains in the 1830s, so the creature remained undiscovered until 1986, when it was spotted by park rangers. Only now has it been recognized as its own species.

Gabriele Gentile, of Rome's University Tor Vergata, and colleagues are the first team to research and document the iguana, which will receive a formal scientific name in an upcoming paper.

Have you ever seen a pink dolphin? Me either...but Believe It or Not!, here it is! Charter boat captain Erik Rue, 42, captured this image after the mammal first surfaced in Lake Calcasieu, an inland saltwater estuary, north of the Gulf of Mexico in southwestern USA. He said: "I just happened to see a little pod of dolphins, and I noticed one that was a little lighter. "It was absolutely stunningly pink.” It is actually an albino dolphin. A close relation of dolphins, the Amazon River Botos, called pink dolphins, live in South America in the Amazon. USA Photo: CATERS NEWS

Rare tongue-eating parasite found
A rare parasite which burrows into host fish before eating and replacing their tongues with itself has been found off the Jersey coast.

Fishermen near the Minquiers - islands under the jurisdiction of Jersey - found the isopod, a type of louse, inside a weaver fish.

Marine researcher Paul Chambers, from the Société Jersiaise, was one of the fishing party and identified the find.

He said he was surprised to find the isopod away from the Mediterranean sea.

Isopods are normally about 2cm (1in) long and live in fish, surviving on the animal's blood, in warm waters.

'Quite vicious'

Mr Chambers told BBC Jersey: "When we emptied the fish bag out there at the bottom was this incredibly ugly looking isopod.

"Really quite large, really quite hideous - if you turn it over its got dozens of these really sharp, nasty claws underneath and I thought 'that's a bit of a nasty beast'.

"I struggled for weeks to find an identification for this thing until, quite by chance I stumbled across something that looked similar in a Victorian journal.

"Apparently there's not too much ill effect to the fish itself except it's lost its tongue."

Experts at the University of Southampton confirmed that the creature was an isopod and that there had been several sightings of them in Cornwall in 1996.

Mr Chambers added: "It doesn't affect humans other than if you do actually come across a live one and try and pick it up - they are quite vicious, they will deliver a good nip."

Pink grasshopper!

James Chubb, education ranger for East Devon District Council, said: "There are billions of meadow grasshoppers across England but this is the first pink one I have ever seen.

"It is caused by a genetic mutation in its reproductive cycle.

"It's almost a full adult, so if it has survived this long being bright pink there is a chance it will live to reproduce and pass on its pink gene."

He said grasshoppers of different colours were "unusual" but not unheard of. BBC

Old woman (101) grows horn on her headA year ago, this horn began to grow from the left side of the forehead of 101-year-old

The picture is no trick – a genuine horn measuring six centimetres is protruding from Zhang Ruifang's head and a second is beginning to grow on the other side.

Ruifang lives in the small village Linlou in the Henan province in China. The mother-of-seven discovered a patch of rough skin on her forehead a year ago.

“We didn't pay too much attention to it,” her youngest son Zhang Guozheng (60) told the Daily Mail.

But within a short amount of time, a brown horn grew from his mother’s forehead!

“It is now six cm long,” said Guozheng. And as if that wasn’t enough: “Now something is also growing on the right side of her forehead. It’s quite possible that it’s another horn.”  bild.de

BBC:  Experts unravel 'churkey' appearance mystery

The Transylvanian naked neck chicken has been dubbed the "churkey"

The "churkey" owes its distinctive look to a complex genetic mutation, according to scientists.

Experts at Edinburgh University set out to discover how the Transylvanian naked neck chicken came by its appearance.

The bird, which has also been dubbed the turken, has the neck of a turkey and the body of a chicken.

The scientists said the effects of the genetic mutation were enhanced by a vitamin A-derived substance produced around the bird's neck.

This causes a protein, BMP12, to be produced, suppressing feather growth and causing the bird to have its bald neck, according to researchers at the Roslin Institute at Edinburgh University.

The team said the findings could help poultry production in hot countries because chickens with naked necks were better equipped to withstand the heat.

They also have implications for understanding how birds, including vultures, evolved to have featherless necks.

Transylvanian naked neck chickens, which are thought to have originated from the north of Romania, were introduced to Britain in the 1920s.

Researchers analysed DNA samples from naked neck chickens in Mexico, France and Hungary to find the genetic mutation.

Skin samples from embryonic chickens were also analysed using complex mathematical modelling.

Dr Denis Headon, who led the research, said: "Not only does this help our understanding of developmental biology and give insight into how different breeds have evolved, but it could have practical implications for helping poultry production in hot countries, including those in the developing world."

The research, published in the journal PLoS, was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
