James Cameron On 'Avatar 2': 'It's Building There'

James Cameron talks "Avatar 2" progress.

So much has been made in recent months about tentative 2015 releases "Star Wars: Episode VII," "Justice League" and "Marvel's The Avengers 2" that it's easy to forget there might be a sequel to "Avatar" coming in that year as well.

Speaking to reporters at the New Zealand premiere of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in November of 2012, director James Cameron said the goal was to shoot "Avatar 2" sometime in 2013; Cameron previously stated that he had hoped to get "Avatar 2" in theaters by 2015 or later.

"I'm deep into it and I'm living in Pandora right now," Cameron told Play Goes Strong in a new interview. "There is that start up torque where you feel it's coming to you. Then you build up momentum. That's when it gets fun. The characters talk and it's writing itself. I'm almost there right now. It's building fast."

That's good news for those anxious to see another "Avatar" film; the 2009 blockbuster grossed over $2.7 billion worldwide, making it the highest grossing movie of all-time. For his part, Cameron has remained focused on the world of Pandora for the last four years.

"Last year, I basically completely disbanded my production company's development arm," Cameron told the New York Times in May of last year. "So I’m not interested in developing anything. I'm in the 'Avatar' business. Period. That's it. I'm making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4,' and I'm not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I'm not interested in taking scripts."

That may be, but Cameron did acquire the rights to Taylor Stevens' "The Informationist" late last year. According to THR, Cameron could direct the film after he's done living in Pandora, which means it probably won't happen within the next five or more years.
