Historical note: Valencia was once known as Panangatan, after the Panangatan River. Historically speaking, Valencia was part of Dimiao before partition. Until, in the late 19th century when the people of Panangatan wrote to the Spanish gobernador and recollecta in Cebu to be granted independence from Dimiao. The recollect priest and government officials acquiesced to the request of the people of Panangatan and granted the area autonomy.
Panangantan was ultimately renamed to VALENCIA, the hometown of the recollect priest who came to survey the new town.
Since then, Valencia has surpassed / eclipsed its old mother town, Dimiao, in economic activity, wealth, and population size. Valencia's population (30,000+) is double that of Dimiao's (15,000+).
