The world's most popular children's show, Sesame Street is broadcast in more than 140 countries, and there are 20 international versions of the show. The first one aired in Brazil; it was called Vila Sésamo. In China it was called Zhima Jie and in Germany, Sesamstraße. The Israeli version is known as Rechov Sumsum, Kuwait's is Iftah Ya Simsim, South Africa's is Takalani Sesame and in Poland the show is called Ulica Sezamkowa. Bert and Ernie and their friends have been hanging out on Sesame Street for 40 years now. Sesame Street first premiered on what became PBS-TV on this date in 1969. Joan Ganz Cooney, the founder of the Children's Television Workshop, is credited with having created Sesame Street.
