The Barber’s Paradox
« on: May 30, 2010, 07:50:32 AM »

Suppose there is a town with just one male barber, and that every man in the town keeps himself clean-shaven: some by shaving themselves, some by attending the barber. It seems reasonable to imagine that the barber obeys the following rule: He shaves all and only those men in town who do not shave themselves.

Under this scenario, we can ask the following question: Does the barber shave himself?
Asking this, however, we discover that the situation presented is in fact impossible:

- If the barber does not shave himself, he must abide by the rule and shave himself.
- If he does shave himself, according to the rule he will not shave himself.

(as formulated in www.listverse.com)

How would the Earth looks like if there were no barbers and shaving of our hair was not invented.?

If the barbar does not wish to shave, then he does not wish to shave. As was the style in Europe and the United States during the 19th century, it was fashion sense to have facial hair. Those that could not did what they could do...they grew mutton chops. ha ha

Lets examine some:

British gentlemen, victorian era

General U. S. Grant, Commanding General of the Army of the Potomac

General Robert E. Lee, Commanding General of the Army of Northern Virginia, The Confederacy

His Royal Siamese Majesty, King Chulalongkorn The Great, King of Siam

~~~
Some Famous Filipino History Figures:
Marcelo Del Pilar, Filipino Revolutionista, Pro Independencia, La Solidaridad
Marcelo Del Pilar, photo taken in Spain.
~~
Again, it was the style of the day, and even to this day where there are a variance in facial hair styles. Bare shaven to full grown beard.
The Meiji Emperor, In European-style regalia.
In my opinion, he looks handsome with his European(prussian-style) beard, authoritative and progressive.
The great Thai King, Chulalongkorn the Great (Rama V of the Chakri Dynasty):
Posing with family in European-style regalia and styling the Russian-Moustache.
His Majesty King Chulalongkorn was great friends with Tzar Nicholas, during their early years.
Speaking of history, did you know rogamz, that in earlier times, when bleeding was part of medicine (interesting that this practice is still retained to this day, especially in cases of hemochromatosis), it was the barber who was the phlebotomist/surgeon.
During the training of Napoleon's surgical teams for his army, the French employed barbers to the front as surgeons. Interesting tidbit.
