It thrives by heavy traffic, soaks up pollutants and does it better than all the rest! The cotoneaster shrub absorbs 20% more emissions than other shrubs on busy roads, and in 7 days, a 3-foot hedge absorbs the same amount of pollution that a car emits over a 500-mile drive. Planting this shrub along roadsides could be key to combatting CO2 emissions, flooding and heatwaves while also turning urban areas green! A study found that plant species with more complex, denser canopies and rough and hairy leaves like the cotoneaster are most effective in soaking up pollutants. Scientists are now trying to identify more super plants by studying the unique qualities of many different types of vegetation. Fighting climate change means going green so let's plant for the planet and keep nature thriving!
