IT MAY be shocking to be rained on with fishes as residents of Loreto town in Agusan del Sur experienced, but a rain of fish is a natural although unusual occurrence.
Residents were keeping warm in their homes in Loreto as it was raining Friday morning when they suddenly went out in droves, unmindful of the rain as small yellow fishes believed to be mudfish fingerlings fell from the sky.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of the Department of Agriculture has yet to issue official statement on what the fishes were as residents gave their own supernatural interpretations on what happened made worse by deep religious roots of some, thus inferring to the rain of frogs in the Bible.
But Lin Chambers, of the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (Nasa) Langley Research Center, in her article posted on Nasa official website, said such occurrence as natural and has no supernatural value.
Chambers said there were several occasions in United States wherein rainfall brings several creatures like frogs, fishes, and various forms of insects.
Chambers said the weird phenomena can be attributed to various factors and one of those is explained by the weather bureau stationed in Agusan.
The station of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration in Agusan said the fishes found on top of the roofs of residents can be due to a water spout (ipo-ipo) formed from a cumuliform cloud above a body of water that vacuumed up the fishes and then dropped it in Loreto as the water spout dissipated.
"The essential skill that scientists bring to such a situation is the ability and habit of mind to immediately turn wild speculation into testable questions, and to identify the evidence that would allow that question to be answered," Chambers said.
