Adweek, the leading resource for the brand marketing and advertising community, announced the return of the Adweek Executive Mentor Program, supporting senior marketers on the road to executive positions. Spearheaded by the Adweek D&I Council and Steering Committee, this mentorship program is focused on ensuring a more inclusive future for the brand marketing industry through the advancement of diverse executives.
The Adweek Executive Mentor Program launched in October 2019, its first round attracting 110 mentors from among the industry’s top leaders. Of the 116 graduating executive mentees, 73 percent were female and 65 percent people of color. The 2020 program more than doubles the number of high-profile mentors to 230.
Mentors and mentees alike have been effusive in their enthusiasm for the project.
“I’ve loved being a mentor in this program,” said Marisa Thalberg, Chief Brand & Marketing Officer of Lowe's Companies, Inc. “I only wish it had existed when I was earlier in my own career."
"It is an unwritten commandment in the preservation and advancement of any craft or culture: knowledge has to be shared. Mentoring, therefore, is an obligation for those who love their craft,” said Antonio Lucio, Global CMO of Facebook. “To know is to love. To love is to share. To share is to transcend."
Mentee Lizette Williams, Sr., Director of Brand and Content Strategy at McDonald's had this to say about having Lucio as her mentor: “We shared passion around diversity. For me, it's personal. Not only do I represent being a woman of color, I am the first person in my family to go to college. I am the second person to graduate from high school. And what does that mean? It means that programs like this are leveling the playing field, not just providing an equal playing ground, but really allowing there to be equity in opportunity and preparation, and just giving people like me a chance.”
Starting today, potential mentees can apply to be matched with one of over 200 top marketing leaders here. A pitch competition will be held for applicants— who should be mid-senior executive marketers—to earn time with one of our executive mentors. Adweek will qualitatively evaluate every pitch and assign the strongest pitch for each mentor based on the merit of submission. The deadline to submit applications is Thursday, April 30, 2020.
If chosen, the mentee earns two 30-minute phone calls with their mentor and Adweek will help prepare both the mentee and the mentor for success.
“We know there is a cliff that talented mid– to senior-level executives from diverse backgrounds have to scale to get to the C-suite,” said Nadine Dietz, chief community officer of Adweek. “Our mentor program is inclusive, with an emphasis on helping groups who are most in need of representation in leadership positions. This initiative was born from the commitment of the Adweek D&I Council as a major industry action to accelerate change.”
