Best Western eyes 15 RP hotels by 2012

By Elaine Ramos Alanguilan
Manila Standard Today

Best Western International, the world’s largest hotel chain, plans to expand its network in the Philippines to 15 hotels by 2012 from only two amid optimism on the country’s potential as a top tourist destination.

Cyndy Tan Jarabata, president of Tajara Leisure and Hospitality, the local development partner of Best Western International that owns the Best Western brand, said yesterday that 15 hotels and resorts catering to the mid-range segment would be carrying the brand by 2012.

The hotel chain manages over 4,000 hotels and over 300,000 rooms across the globe.

“The present economic climate provides an excellent opportunity for developing hotels. The market is strong and not overcrowded,” said Jarabata.

“Investors, who own land, can build now because construction costs are relatively low while bank loans are competitive. There is also the prospect of a robust economic recovery by 2011 to 2012, so by building now, you can be ready for the uptick,” she said.

Two Best Western brands currently operate in the Philippines—Best Western Astor Hotel Makati and Best Western Hotel La Corona in Manila.

Three, meanwhile, are either undergoing re-branding or under construction. Jarabata said the Cebu hotel, which is under construction, would cater to the business and leisure markets while the Boracay facility would target the leisure and conference markets. The third one in Manila, which is also under construction, will be marketed as a business hotel.

Jarabata said Tajara Leisure as development partner looks for partners—either existing hotels or those that are going to be built ground up—that want to make use of the Best World brand and infrastructure.

The investors are the ones that will fund the development of the hotels and resorts and neither Tajara nor Global Western would put in equity in the development. Owners would have to pay an average one-time joining fee of $56,000 for a 100-room hotel to be accredited with Best Western.

Jarabata said other priority areas for hotel expansion are Bohol, Palawan, Naga (for Camarines Sur), Subic, Tagaytay, Baguio and Davao.

Glenn Souza, Best Western International vice president international operations-Asia, said the chain’s expansion would enhance the Philippines’ potential as a top tourism destination.

“Every country has its own charm. The Philippines is a well-known destination, it will always attract tourists. The only difference it has with other countries is its lack of commitment from both government and the industry in marketing the country as destination,” said Souza.

He said the local industry has been more reactive than proactive.

“The Philippines ranked among the top three destinations in Asean, but it ranked below the top five in terms of the pace of progress in terms of infrastructure and security. The government has to take a serious look on it because the tourism industry brings in a lot of dollars. It has to be more aggressive in promotions, in putting in place the infrastructure and the kind of security that the market needs,” added Souza.

As long as Bohol does not have an internationally branded hotel (Hilton, Shangri-la, etc.), it will remain a second-tier tourist destination or just Cebu's satellite that's good only for day-tour services. The entry of Best Western International, which has its own international marketing network, will firm up Bohol's position among the world's tourist destinations. With the slated completion of the international airport on Panglao in 2010, hotel chains will certainly be vying as to who will be the first to break ground here.

Kay ug ako ang papilion i would prefer good beds than resorts!

Then the tourism bonanza will be distributed among the local stakeholders as well, dili lang ma-corner sa big players.

Ang problema daw sa Panglao ron kay wala daw block ownership ang mga yuta, pasabot walay area in the hectares nga usa ra ang owner nga pwede kapaliton sa mga hotel operators. Big hotels perhaps need at least one or two hectares.

Sa ranking sa mga accommodation facilities sa Bohol, those in the top are Amorita and Amarela which have very limited number of rooms. BBC has slipped down to something like #16, even below the Nuts Huts along Loboc. To be able to accommodate high-end local and foreign tourists, who really spend more, we should really upgrade our facilities.

Busa new owners are bringing in young topguns kay dili pa sungayan (horny  ;D)   hehe.

Kanang US$ 4K (Ps 192,000) per day sa eskaya grabe naman pud to. Sa category nga hotel, resort (and spa) murag mahal as in mahal.  Silang Kris Aquino and family naka anha man last year and I doubt they will spent that much.  :o

Intercon and Marriot have the same hotel chain organizaton I guess here in the Phils. Ang mga standard room rate nila ani per day starts at Ps 5,500 (US$ 115). ;D   Usually libre 1 guest for the breakfast buffet.

Okay baya. Room rates start at Ps 2,500.

Cheers!

Aaron, you should not say that. why should you guys stay in a hotel when you have your own homes? Dont you know what a HOTEL means? -puy-anan sa mga taga dili dinha.

When there are good hotels, it attract people to your island, and thus can generate money to Bohol.

We want to invite more people to Bohol, and you know what it could make...

For me that is very wrong. Ngano mo check in pa man mo? Im really wondering why?? Kami lagi diri sa Merika di man lagi mi mo check in ug hotel in our area? unless ning larga mi?

One best example,  Swakee is in Hawaii and yes she can afford to stay in one of Hawaii's best pero ang mga taga Hawaii di man lagi sila mo check in?

I am just wondering...what for? a break? My God you got the biggest and world's best beaches that doesnt need to check in some big hotels and resorts. So why spend?

I know kabalo mo sa tubag...

na unsa na ni dire?

Naa man jud time na maka stay ug hotel especially kon bakasyonista na ta's ato unya mo adto ta sa island.  I have no problem with that.  I have issue however if one says na "walay polos ang mga taga ato" kay di ka afford aning mga mamahalin na hotels.  I just don't like the words na walay polos kay negative kaayo ang connotation.  We locals of Bohol will enjoy Bohol the best way we can and if those huge hotels  are too expensive for us, pwes ila na lang na ilang hotel.  pastilan pod $4k per day! Bisan pa siguro'g kadaog ko'g lotto, di ko mo bayad ana ka mahal.  but then again, it's all a matter of preference ug sa maka afford ra pod lagi.

suway gud ug check in sa Eskaya Aduy aron makahibalo ka kung ganong dili man sila ang no#1 4 thousand dollar ra bitaw ang per night nila kwento ng trip na trip sa abs cbn na palabas.

Prices varies .. smaller room are cheaper versus suite or private villas.  High end acommodations often come with many ammenities, better services, excellent quality beds/rooms, large living space .. etc.

What you saw on cbn/abs is really more of an intrigue to the viewers.  This is about ratings on tv.

If you can affort it, sure, rent one and enjoy.

I think we're losing sight of the issue here. Let us put this "good news" in a higher perspective and I agree with TB padrenos' opinion below.

Fore!

P.S.  Grazie/Ms D.,   :P

Hi Beds,

Thanks for elevating not only the issue, but also us as "padrinos." Na-promote tawon ug kalit, murag naniguwang na ta ani.

Even as I personally consider the issue of international hotel chains making an entry into the Bohol tourist industry good news, I can also accept dissenting points of views on this matter. I think our LGU has to make and enact policy guidelines to enhance the stake of the locals in the tourism sector.

We can learn from Bea Zobel, who was initially pilloried by the locals for her otherwise great rehabilitation and preservation projects in Dauis and Baclayon, and changed tack midstream to incorporate the community in the projects.

The LGUs should launch skills training for the locals so that they can be employable in the world-class tourism sector. For example, our LGU can train tour guides who are conversant in English and other foreign languages (Japanese, European, etc.), have world-standard culinary skills, experts in rapelling, diving and other special tourism segments, etc.

The tourism industry--as a whole--should not be an enclave for the rich and famous, and foreign--let's leave this to Eskaya as its business strategy.

Unless there is sideward or lateral positive effects of tourism in the lives of Boholanos, we may just be aggravating the divide between the haves and the have-nots. But if tourism is steered so that it generates employment in the hospitality sector (hotels, resorts and resutaurants), stimulates related services (like retail, transportation, education, etc.) and local production (handicraft, food, etc.), I believe it will be sustainable in the long run.

I think we're losing sight of the issue here. Let us put this "good news" in a higher perspective and I agree with TB padrenos' opinion below.

Hi Belle,

I'm planning on a more slow-paced academic career in Bohol, tudlu-tudlo ug ginagmay sa mga universities.

I feel at this stage that I'm just standing still and sitting out at the same time. I just have the urge to take a leap of faith if only to feel I'm alive!

Proverbs 19
21 Many are the plans in a man's heart,
but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.

Hi Ms. Da,

No probs.  Organizing a get-together event is not a problem to me.  It's a matter of delineation or designating  a chair for each committee.   I had chaired three (3) successful golf tournaments for the rotary and I think I can handle this.  I'm looking forward to this event pag di ta ma AHINI.   Hehe.   A(h1n1).

Cheers!
