MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines isn't among the world's most disrespectful countries for travelers and is in fact at the bottom of the list of nations whose people never smile and are particularly unfriendly.
Forbes magazine cited the results of a survey conducted by travel search cite Skyscanner.com, which showed that the top four rudest nations for travelers are France with 19.29 percent of the votes; Russia with 16.56 percent of the votes; Great Britain with 10.43; and Germany with 9.93.
Of the 33 countries listed in the survey, the Philippines with 0.17 percent of the votes and the Carribean and Brazil, each with 0.08 percent of the votes, are considered by travelers as the places with the least rude locals.
Skyscanner's survey received over 1,200 responses. Sixty-five percent of the respondents were from the UK and Ireland, while the rest were from North America, Australia, and other places in Europe.
"Some of the perceived rudeness may be attributable to cultural differences rather than anything intentional," said Forbes's contributing writer Andrew Bender.
He cited the observation of Tatiana Danilova, Skyscanner’s Russian market manager, on the seeming unfriendliness of the Russian language.
“The Russian language is not as polite as English, so when Russians translate directly from Russian to English, it can sound rude to an English speaker even if they don’t mean it to" said Danilova.
The same principle may also apply to France.
“As our closest neighbors, there has long been a familiar rivalry between the UK and France,†said Sam Baldwin, Skyscanner's travel editor. " “Even the French acknowledge that the way they are perceived is not entirely without basis."
