Leyte town showcases nature-based business projects
Written by Felix N. Codilla III / Correspondent

Business Mirror

LIKE any fourth-class municipality, Tabango, Leyte, has its own share of socio-economic problems that hamper the community’s growth. But financial constraint has never been an excuse for its visionary mayor, who opted to rely on the beauty of his town’s natural resources and join the eco-tourism bandwagon.

Eco-tourism is not new anymore in Tabango, which lies 63 kilometers northwest of Ormoc, a one-and-a-half hour drive away. Since assuming his position in 2001, Mayor Bernard Jonathan Remandaban saw the town’s potential to attract foreigners in experiencing the sights and delights of this hidden paradise.

A former IT educator of De La Salle Taft, “Mayor Benjo,” as he is fondly called by his constituents, knew early on that tourism was Tabango’s only ticket to development. Thus, in 2006, he launched an island-hopping tour which took visitors to seven nearby islands, including the famous Malapascua in Cebu.

Another proof of Remandaban’s seriousness in promoting tourism was the launching of a new floating restaurant that would cruise the stretch of the wide Palaypayan River. For only P500,000, the local government unit (LGU) and barangay Hibacungan manufactured the floating craft.

The barangay will operate the vessel from which it can earn income. Mayor Remandaban admits the concept is copied from the renowned river cruise of Bohol. But he believes their own Palaypay River has its own share of scenic spots that deserve to be appreciated.

As passengers enjoy their hearty meal to the accompaniment of live acoustic music, a boat tugs the vessel and takes them to 23 turns spanning the stretch of the river. Some of the sights along the route are the Cota Bridge and fishpond project of Kalahi-CIDDS at the cruise’s endpoint in Botason I.

But this river cruise takes passengers further to the sea, something not done by its original Bohol counterpart. As they sail off to Tabango Bay, passengers will easily see the Bantay Dagat watchtower/observation station jutting out of the coast of sitio Buho in barangay Tugas.

They will also marvel at the sun-drenched beaches and the vista of Tabango’s rolling peaks and hills, including Mount Kantur-aw, which soars 200 meters from the ground. And if they’re lucky to take the late- afternoon trip, they will catch the sun dim to a deep-orange glow as it gives way to a dimly lit evening.

While the river cruise has no regular schedule, the LGU accepts reservations for the use of the floating restaurant which is an alternative venue for parties to those who want a unique experience in celebrating special occasions.

The Loboc River Cruise has the advantage of being one among the many stops that a tourist enjoys in a day (from Panglao to Chocolate Hills or Sagbayan Peak) which is not the case for Tabango, or Leyte. Although there are a lot of potential tourist destinations in this province, they are far from each other. A stress-free one-day multiple-destinations tour is not quite possible.

Himoga-an River Cruise in Sagay City, Negros Occidental, raised the challenge to Loboc first. As with Tabango, Leyte, their municipal planners should remember that Loboc is just part of a tour itinerary that includes among others Baclayon, the tarsier cage, Chocolate Hills and Panglao--not to mention the magnificent Loboc Choir. I don't think Loboc would attract that many visitors by itself.

My opinion as a foreign tourist there is exactly what some people said.

I went to loboc river as a part of 12 or 14 spots day tour that we designed for a day renting a car and hiring a driver.

I wouldn´t have gone there unless is a link to the next stop :)
Even going there in my case I was a little dissapointed cause the ship we were in rushed thought the river and didn´t stop in any of the other places that other boats I saw they did :P so was really fast and we even were overtaken other boats.

Regards :)

i was also disappointed with my first boat ride to Loboc River and never did i take another cruise. there's not much to see and it wasnt a refreshing and romantic trip because the river was dirty and most of the boats would hurry back. i enjoyed my Damnoen Saduak floating market trip in Thailand better. It was more exciting.

Can one rent  boat for the day? I was told by family members that if one goes on the boat cruise, to make sure one takes prophylaxis for malaria and insect repellant. The waters of Loboc are ridden with Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falcifarum ~ the causatives of malarial infection.

In any river basin.

It would seem from the Youtube postings that the tourists enjoy the ride. But unless we increase the number of tourists substantially, the Loboc river cruise needs newer concepts and better service to sustain the interest of tourists. Loboc's best advantage is still that it is the midpoint of the well-beaten tourism route.

I saw people in privates small boats, not the ones with the buffet so I think must be somebody there hiring a boat.

I do not know if the water is ok or not but I saw some kids jumping and swimming to the river so I am not sure if is really dangerous, maybe a local there can know it better than me :)

The ride was ok. the sightseeing is great for somebody coming from Europe with such a tropical view. The problem is that now the boats seems to rush to do as many rides as possible even overtaking others and not stopping in some spots in the middle, so when you are beggining to eat you are almost coming back. :)

Nindot baya kaayo ang Leyte. Daku lang nga island. Dugay masuroy ang tanan. I've been to quite a lot of caves there. Daghan og tubig (rivers and waterfalls), and forested areas. And the ricefields, galawudlawud. Galing lang kay sa areas nga naay mga hacienda, pronounced kaayo ang poverty.  Naay mga balay nga nangumbitay na sa approach sa mga taytayan, which is wala sa Bohol. Outside the perimeter of the haciendas, daghan mga barong-barong. Pero grabe pud ka datu ang datu gyud. In Southern Leyte, however, mas equitably distributed ang wealth, mora-mora'g Bohol, ang mga tawo Bol-anon og kinaiya ug sinultihan.

Where is this cave and waterfalls located, Koddi? I have never heard of a cave here in Leyte except in Samar wherein waterfalls are also famous. But there is this Busay Falls in Babatngon, Leyte.

Ang mga waterfalls naa sa Ormoc, Baybay, Burauen, Maasin, basta daghan kaayo nga lugar. Ang mga langob naa pud sa Baybay, Isabel, Matalom (where I also saw a large collection of native rice varieties), Maasin. Hapit tanang lungsod naa gyuy suba, unya sa tumoy padung sa bukid naay mga waterfalls. In Maasin I was able to trek-swim inside a cave nga ang entrance waterfalls, ang exit layu-layu pa.

The Agta Beach I know of and have been to is located a few kilometers beyond Naval, the capital of Biliran, an island northwest and once part of Leyte.
