Loboc night cruise becomes Bohol's latest tourist beacon

Loboc River is ‘nature by day, boulevard by night’

By Kit Bagaipo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 03:53:00 05/31/2008

LOBOC, Bohol – Scenic Loboc River in Bohol has something new to offer to guests who want to experience the rustic environment that has popularized river cruising in Loboc town, which is fast becoming a tourist destination.

The Bohol provincial government’s aggressive promotion of ecotourism, along with the benevolence of Chinese businessman and Philippine Special Ambassador to China Carlos Chan, have made possible night cruises aboard floating restaurants on the Loboc River.

Aptly dubbed by town Mayor Leon Calipusan as “Nature by day, boulevard by night,” the river lighting project, which costs P13.5 million, is said to be the first of its kind in the country.

As the project’s main feature, some 450 lampposts and floodlights were installed along the lush green riverbank, stretching almost three kilometers from the frontage of the centuries-old Loboc Church toward Busai falls.

The Jesuit-built old stone church itself is beamed with floodlights creating a spectacular reflection on the river’s calm water. The two bailey bridges crossing the river are also lit up.

The play of lights lends a romantic air to the night cruise while one enjoys a dinner buffet of native food aboard the floating restaurant.

Known as the music capital of Bohol, the municipality of Loboc is home to the world-acclaimed Loboc Children’s Choir. If one is lucky, a local band is on board the floating restaurant to render soft music.

This music-loving town started the “river-cruising-aboard-floating-restaurants” business some 13 years ago. It became an occasional side trip for tourists who come to Bohol either for its pristine white sand beaches or its world-renowned Chocolate Hills.

Now, tours would not miss the experience of Loboc River Cruise as the town lies along the path from the popular resorts of Panglao Island going to the Chocolate Hills.

According to Calipusan, the daytime river cruise attracts an average of 800 guests daily. The volume made it hard for the floating restaurant operators and the municipal government to manage the traffic and congestion at the river.

A year ago, a floating restaurant operator introduced a downstream cruise, to get away from the congestion on the regular upstream route.

The municipal government likewise embarked on the construction of a modern 120-meter docking port for all the floating restaurants which is complemented by an eco-tourism center that houses the tourism office, a visitors’ lounge and air-conditioned comfort rooms. The project cost about P10 million, which was in part funded by Chan, who is also special ambassador of the Philippines to China.

Here's the night cruise inaugural video. We could see some TB members towards the end of this video, among whom are Melrose and El Mundo.

I love you for this Ms. Dabins kay ang atong mga forest daghang namuyo diha nga mga nocturnal creatures. For millions of years na evolve sila nga matulog sa buntag ug mo mata sa gabii para mo hunt ug ilang pagkaon. Kung lamdag ang palibot, dili na sila mo gawas sa ilang gi taguan ug they might starve. Drastic change in habitat would lead to extinction.

We have to consider that one of our main attraction in Bohol is the Tarsier which is a nocturnal creature.

Meanwhile, (the good side) the river cruise program itself has contributed huge impact in preserving the environment through spreading awareness and keeping the water clean for the impression of the tourists. I have no doubt about this fact.

However, without proper study/assessment from experts, we can not say it is good and there is nothing wrong with being skeptical because once we harm these creatures, they might be lost forever.

The keyword here is "respect". We are just residents enjoying the pristine beauty of nature. Let us not abuse, exploit and overuse.

So, if the result of the study is OK, then OK lang pod para nako.

Thank you Macks, i appreciate it... abi gud nimo Macky when i was a very small girl naka kita na ko ug logging sa Mindanao kay akong papa nag work man sa usa ka dako nga logging conpany...

Dayun nakita nako ang mga dagkooooo kaajo nga kahoy nga sumala sa akong papa kadtong kahoya tinanom pa kuno sa Ginoo hahaha sukad pag himo sa Ginoo sa kalibutan, so what i thought sa karaan na kaayo sa kahoy maka tanom pa kaha ta to replaced the same big trees?dayun unsaon naman lang sa mga langgam? and that was when i was about 7 or 8 years old, and i never forget those questions same as net fishing nga ang mga baby fishes namatay sad apil sa mga parent fishes...

Macky, as i look at our country now, wala juy replacement sa trees nothing changed but upaw na kaayo ang kabukiran, waht was our government doing? Still exploit what is left...nawala na gani ang atong pinaka gwapo nga PHILIPPINE EAGKES KAY WA NAY KA TUGDONAN! Macks diri sa Merika nag hire ug mga Salvadorian ( a friend of mine) and other latino people to plant trees sa pina ka toktok sa mga kabukiran or even mga bakante nga yuta diri. Now, i was wondering, daghan kaayo tang mga IDLE people nga nag sigi rag text-text bisan pwerteng lisora... why not require them to go to the upaw forest and plant trees? and i heard nga kanag river bank sa loboc gipang putol ang mga ubang trees for what ever reason i dont know?

Mao nga dili jud ko kasabot sa Pilipinas hangtud karon, nga nag tralala sila ug exploit sa river nga ma erode man na in few years from now ug banatan na sha ug bawod-bawod sa mga pump boat? well i really dont know too how many boats running there...

Ms. Dabins,

Actually, Kadtong mga punoan ug Acacia by Loboc Roadside nga dili na magakus ug lima ka tao unya gipang putol, mga tinanom pa intawn to sa akong Lolo Rufino Sarmiento.

Surveyor man akong Lolo mga 1920's or 1930's siguro to ug sila ang nag gama anang interior road from Loboc to Carmen Cocolate Hills. To beautify the place, ang akong lolo nag order sa iyang mga trabahante nga mag tanom ug Acacia every 100 meters beside the road. Mga four years old pa siguro ko kadtong namatay akong Lolo.

Ang akong vision adto sa High School pa ko nga gam-an ug Tree House kadtong dagkong Acacia nga tinanom sa akong lolo. Unya puede to himoon ug pahulayanan kung mag hike or bike ang mo adto sa Chocolate hills - one of my crazy ideas. Hehehe.

a brief story lifted from the net about Liwayway Corp. and bio of Mr. Carlos Chan, a Filipino-Chinese business tycoon

The history of Liwayway Marketing Corporation dates back to 1946, when a small family business engaged in the repacking of flour and coffee products was established through the efforts of Mr. Chan Lib and his wife, Mrs. See Ying. In 1966, the business was converted into a corporation, as it expanded into the distribution of pomade, candles, candies and sauces.

By 1974, under the second generation management headed by Manuel Chan, LMC diversified into the manufacturing of snack foods such as "Oishi Prawn Crackers" and "Kirei Yummy Flakes." The snack food business proved to be encouraging that the company eventually concentrated in this enterprise. Over the years, the company invested in more sophisticated equipment to upgrade the quality of their existing products and to develop new ones to introduce to the market. "Oishi" became the patent brand for all our product lines, and has since established itself as a major player in the Philippine snack food market.

In 1993, under the management of Carlos Chan, the company embarked on its first venture in China, beginning with two companies in Shanghai: Shanghai Liwayway Food Industries Limited and Shanghai Prawn Cracker Foodstuff Company Limited. Since then, the China operations have grown to more than 12 companies located all over the mainland under the head company, Liwayway (China) Company, Limited. Their products in China are marketed under the brand "Oishi Shanghaojia," which in 2001, received the Shanghai Famous Brands award, firmly establishing itself as a major brand in Shanghai, and the rest of China as well.

A few years later, manufacturing facilities were also set up in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (1997) and in Yangon, Myanmar (1999), where Oishi is now the leading snack food brand.

In Japan, there is a short but pithy saying, tada yori takai mono ha nai, which translates roughly as "nothing is more expensive than something given free."

The equivalent American expression is, "there is no such thing as a free lunch."

I understand that being suspicious of the ulterior motives behind an act of benevolence is part of human nature. I also undersand that Carlos Chan is not only a philantropist but also a patron of music and arts as well.

It is not far-fetched to assume that he's really just giving us a free ride... Neither is it far-fetched to think that the Loboc night cruise may yet be Bohol's tourism centerpiece, as we attract more honeymooners who'll find the night cruise a romantic prelude to the main course...

On my next trip in July, I plan to take my wife on a night cruise... Just to test if there will be hormonal reactions, explosions or even pyrotechnics so I can sell Loboc honeymoon packages to Japanese newlyweds from personal testimony...

hi kiamoy,

I just remember nga mahilig kaayo ni si Paolo ug kiamoy or plum fruit. In Japan, there is a seaweed-wrapped rice pack called onigiri that has different flavors. Ang pinakagusto niya umeboshi or plum flavor... He also likes plum candies or just plain plum.

a brief story lifted from the net about Liwayway Corp. and bio of Mr.

Thanks Scott sa imong information.

Hope diri niya i-deposit iyang profit sa Pilipinas para mo grow atong economiya.

Ang ilang achievements dapat kapanaminan matag usa kanato.
