Ayala Center Cebu has opened its new public utility vehicle (PUV) terminal to provide better transport facilities to shoppers and pave the way for the construction of a P2.8-billion expansion of one of Cebu's biggest malls.
The new PUV terminal, which is facing the Archbishop Reyes Ave., is a two-storey facility with a total gross floor area of 4,000 square meters.
Joy Polloso, general manager of Ayala Center Cebu, said the company invested about P53 million for the construction of the facility, which will house amenities like restrooms and food stalls.
Polloso said the new terminal will still house the existing seven routes for jeepneys and five routes for v-hires.
"We just merely transferred the existing routes from the old terminal to this new facility," she said.
The terminal's ground area will accommodate the jeepney routes going to Colon, Guadalupe, Mandaue and Labangon, while the second floor will house the jeepney routes going to Talamban, SM, Lahug as well as the v-hire routes going to Opon Consolacion, Liloan, Balamban Asturias and Tuburan.
Polloso also said that although they set up a facility to better serve their customers, the mall is working closely with the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) for improvements in traffic management in the entire Cebu Business Park.
Ayala Center Cebu alone recorded about 800 trips a day for its accredited jeepneys and v-hire units.
Polloso also said the completion of the new passenger terminal signals the beginning of the construction of the mall's phase 2B, which is set to break ground next Monday.
Phase 2B, which will be built at the old passenger terminal, is estimated to cost P2.8 billion with a leasable area of 36,000 square meters.
This new phase, which will feature stores of luxury brands, is expected to be completed in 2013. (PNA)
