CALBAYOG CITY -- The city tourism office here will validate the study of college students listing 35 waterfalls in the city, more than the number assessed by the local government.

Students of Northwest Samar State University taking Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management informed the city tourism office of the result of their study, based on the number of waterfalls they visited for their thesis, said Calbayog City Tourism Officer Ronald Ricafort, Jr.

Currently, the city tourism office listed 22 waterfalls based on the latest assessment of the City Tourism Office and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The number is more than the 19 waterfalls previously validated.

“We need to visit these sites like what we did in Tinaplacan when we learned that there are seven waterfalls and not just two as documented in the past,” said Ricafort on Tuesday.

Tinaplacan is a village located in the northern part of the city, about 40-minute travel from Tarangban Falls -- the biggest and the most visited waterfalls in the city.

Other attractions in the village are Bangon Falls and the newly-discovered Larik Falls, Baru-baluto Falls, Madalunot Falls, Ginsanghan Falls, and Muto-buto Falls.

“Practically we have to go there and take pictures for actual validation. Even the information that we receive is supported with pictures and videos, our personnel have to go there for confirmation,” Ricafort said.

“If these are validated and assessed that this number is indeed true, then Calbayog really is the City of Waterfalls not only in the Visayas but in the country. That is why I am really curious on the data of this thesis,” he added.

Ricafort added that the high number of waterfalls is not surprising considering that Calbayog is the third largest city in the country in terms of land and water areas.

About 40 percent of the city's land area is plain and hilly, while the remaining are rugged mountain ranges with elevations ranging from 300 to 700 meters above sea level.

However, even if this information is validated to be true, the city tourism officer said that they could not immediately push for its promotion because they have to consider many aspects.

“There is a rapid assessment before we can promote these waterfalls as tourism site. We also have to prepare people on the ground,” Ricafort added.

Some of the waterfalls in Calbayog, which are identified and assessed, are Bangon-Bugtong Falls,Tabukno Falls, Pan-as Falls, Lologayan Falls, Ton-ok Falls, Busay Falls, Kalidungan Falls, and Macawat Rock Slide.

The city of Calbayog is known as the gateway to Samar province.

From Manila and Cebu, there are flights directly to the city. There are also buses plying to Calbayog from Manila for a full-day trip.

The city is 172 kilometers north from Tacloban, the regional capital. (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
