Finnair was considered as the world's safest airline by the end of 2012, Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE reported on Tuesday, quoting the JACDEC Safety Index.
According to the report, Finland's national carrier topped the list with the least fatal accidents, followed by Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific Airways and Emirates and Etihad.
Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre or JACDEC,is a Hamburg-based information collector and analyzer, whose database is said to incorporate thousands of entries of safety occurrences. It collects information of more than 800 airlines in 178 countries and regions.
The Safety Index was developed from the collected data, and was deemed as a probabilistic measurement of airline safety.
It counted the fatalities per Revenue Passenger Terameter performed by airlines in the world.
Finnair is the flag carrier of Finland. The Finnish government is the biggest owner, with 55.8 percent of the shares. It has been ranked one of the safest airlines for several times.
Finnair's last fatal accident was in November 1963, when an OH-LCA crashed near Aland islands, killing 22 passengers and all the crew members. The airliner has relatively few misses and other incidents ever since.
