Bernales Nat’l Open
THE two Cebuano netters seeing action in the 3rd Mayor Eutiquio M. Bernales Sr. National Open Tennis Tournament had contrasting fates as only one of them advanced to the second round at the Sen. Miguel Zubiri Center Court in Ubay, Bohol.
While Bernardine Siso had no trouble in advancing to the second round, Bo Alburo, on the other hand, bowed out of the tournament.
Siso showed Jake Basilad of Sogod, Leyte the exit door after he breezed past their match with a 6-2, 6-1 win. He will next face Manila-based davaoeno Macmac Alcoseba, who dismissed Chris Wee of Zamboanga, 6-3, 6-1.
Alburo, on the other hand, did not survive the onslaught unleashed by Manila's RC Mano in the second and third sets of their match.
Alburo started strong with a 6-3 advantage over Mano in the first set. He was not able to maintain his form after his opponent stamped his class, 6-2, 6-4, in the second and third sets.
Defending champion Johnny Arcilla is also on track to grab his third straight title in this tournament after making mince meat of
Talibon, Bohol's Victor Lao, 6-2, 6-2.
Arcilla leads other Manila-based players in advancing to the second round. The others are Patrick John Tiero, who defeated
Rey Vincent Amandoron of Catigbi-an, Bohol, 6-1, 6-0; Rolando Ruel, who annihilated
Ubay, Bohol's representative Bembem Boca, 6-1, 6-0; Rollie Anasta, who demolished Sogod Leyte's Angelpert Jaum, 6-3, 6-0; and Juvan Divinagracia, who blanked Junrey Padilla of Sogod, Leyte, 6-0, 6-0.
Other players who have remained in contention are Sultan Kodarat's Ronard Joven, who outsmarted
Dotdot Salada of Guindulman, Bohol, 6-3, 6-1; Tony Sagansay, who ousted Ken Alburo, 6-3, 6-2, and Joseph Arcilla, who booted out Julrico Pagsiat, 6-3, 6-4.
Of the 18 first round matches scheduled yesterday, four were still being contested as of presstime. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON
