Warning: Text Scam in the Philippines
« on: November 06, 2010, 09:41:22 PM »
The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) has warned the public against hoax text messages purportedly coming from the PIA and claiming that the recipient has won in an electronic raffle.

This warning came after the PIA has been swamped by calls inquiring about the existence of such raffle.

In an interview, Atty. Jose Fabia, director-general of PIA, clarified that their agency is not conducting any raffle or text promo.

“The PIA does not have any promo and is not sending text messages to anyone about winning cash or other prizes,” he said.

A sample message read: “Congratulations! Your mobile number was randomly selected through an electronic raffle of the Philippine Information Center last October 15, 2010 and just won a 2010 Toyota Vios. To claim your prize, please contact Mr. Peter Go at 09274319791.”

Fabia advised the public to disregard and not respond to this and other similar messages which are the work of unscrupulous individuals in an attempt to deceive and rob their unsuspecting victims of money.

The Philippine Information Agency is a unit of the Presidential Communications Operations Office and serves as the government’s main information arm. (PNA)
