Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) announced yesterday that it is looking to upgrade its domestic fibre-optic network (DFON) as it looks to boost the fortunes of the country’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Offshoring and Outsourcing (O&O) industries. PLDT president and CEO Napoleon L Nazareno says the telco is looking to build on its position of owning the ‘largest network capacity of any provider in the country’, noting that the upgrade to 100G technology will put the Philippines on a par with Japan, South Korea, Australia and Singapore. ‘Our upgrade to advanced optical technologies will add significant bandwidth scalability and intelligence to PLDT’s current network infrastructure allowing us to offer 40G and 100G-based services to meet forecast demand in high speed connectivity,’ Nazareno said. Meanwhile, PLDT vice president Eric R Alberto added: ‘PLDT’s accelerated core network modernisation expansion in the ‘Next Wave’ cities such as Iloilo,
Batangas, and Baguio City, will allow them to compete in the global market.’
As reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, last month PLDT signed a PHP1.3 billion (USD30.9 million) contract with Ciena Corporation to upgrade the carrier’s fibre-optic infrastructure with 100 gigabit technology – a first for the Philippines. At the time, Napoleon Nazareno said the upgrade would allow the firm to offer next generation services such as fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), amongst other advanced services. PLDT expects to complete the upgrade in November 2012. - Source:http://www.telegeography.com/products/commsupdate/articles/2012/08/10/pldt-to-improve-dfon-to-benefit-bpo-sector/
