IPOPHL offers patent protection for academic institutions
By Louella D. Desiderio (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - Some 42 academic institutions are expected to benefit from a patent protection incentive package offered by the government, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) said.

IPOPHL director general Ricardo Blancaflor said in an interview that the 42 universities where the Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSO) have been set-up will be given a chance to avail of a program offering free patent filings for their inventions.

“This (incentive package) will encourage many of the inventors to file for protection and eventually, commercialize,” he said.

The ITSOs were put up with the IPOPHL to extend affordable quality patent information search and training services, as well as patent drafting and assistance to inventors and researchers within the academe.

Through the ITSO, inventors and researchers would be able to discover new information on the subject they are working on as well as related prior works in existing patents worldwide in order to avoid duplication of works.
