Optimise NTFS

Optimise NTFS

NTFS is a great filesystem, but its feature-set comes at a slight cost in performance. You can negate this a little with the following tips:

* By default NTFS will automatically update timestamps whenver a directory is traversed. This isn't a necessary feature, and it slows down large volumes.

Disable it by pointing regedit to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem and set 'NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate' to 1.

* NTFS uses disparate master file control tables to store filesystem information about your drives. Over time these core MFT files grow and become fragmented, slowing down all accesses to the drive. By setting aside a little space, MFT's can grow without becoming fragmented. In the same key where you disabled the last access feature creat a new DWORD value called 'NtfsMftZoneReservation' and set it to 2.

Note:  This tweak will not work on FAT32 file systems!

My harddrive is formatted in FAT32. I think most notebook harddrives are designed in this format.

FAT32 is almost obsolete...Im using toshiba satellite a100 and it was formatted in NTFS and almost all the displayed laptops here in the kingdom are also formatted in NTFS. For me, FAT32 will work great only if we are using dual operating systems...

FAT32 has been the format of my harddrive since it was bought. so far i havent had any problem with FAT32. my main concern, as always, is virus. one time i had to re-install windows after my internet explorer and the whole system were hijacked by a high-risk virus. that virus even disabled my system restore configuration.

I'm using NOD32 and I'm quite happy about its update and detection strength.

I used to be a Norton die-hard. But its memory-eating system and costly subscription compelled me to shift to NOD32.

The best anti-virus is Kaspersky (made in Russia).

Try AVG Anti-Virus. It's free, and has been voted as one of the top 3 best anti-virus.

I used Mcafee early this year, but Mcafee is as resource-eater as Norton. I think I would be using NOD32 for many years.

since 2000 im using mcafee as my main anti-virus protection but as what "ban-alam" said, only plugins and some other mem-hugging features causes much load to the system.
