TB spammer etrade "educates" me
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:41:10 AM »
a certain thread in another TB childboard is a spammer named etrade.  the thread is now locked by the webmaster with the curt: 'etrade is a spammer. account is deleted. the signatures contained links with trojan virus. thread closed.'

far from being a techie myself, this set me thinking... will i ever know what's in the minds, never mind the hearts, of spammers and why some of them carry viruses?  are they megalomaniacs out for world domination like the villains of 007 films, or do they simply have the instincts of serial killers?

it's been months since i opened my email address, that's why.  it's been hacked.  i know it's been hacked because some friends had revealed that they've been getting sleazy materials from me and they're wondering whether i've already been employed by hugh hefner as his latest bunny.  (ugh.  despite his having been reported as dead many times and as many times he's been resurrected, i doubt if he would mistake a tarsier for a bunny.)

thus my techie grade 1 section 10 education starts.

What is spam?

Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender. (http://spam.abuse.net/)

Profile Of A Spammer: A Look Inside Their World

In this section, we look into the Profile of a Spammer to learn What makes spammers tick? Why do they get involved in the "business" of sending spam? A closer look at the world of the spammer was needed.

Interestingly enough, research revealed that the profile of a spammer does not differ that much from the profile of a virus creator. They share common traits and personality characteristics that, once read, won't really surprise you at all.

Familiar with spoofing
Uses open relays

Thief Spammer

Sets up a webpage/portal that looks exactly like that of a well known company.

Sends out spam mail to this companies customers advising them to update their payment information or billing details.

The customer responds to this by going to the website and entering their login or credit card details.

The spammer then uses the acquired information to perform other illegal activities as the new identity.

A terminology exists for these activities. They are known as "Email Phishing" or "Spoofing" and "Identity Theft".

aside from inflating their egos, which the rest of the world doesn't care about, do they also inflate their wallets?  but how do they get their money, if that's the case?  (hehe, just an academic curiosity; i'm not really aiming to spam and get rich myself...  ;D)  but how strange the virtual world is...

a lot of these spam bots also provide links to virus-filled sites, which can hack into one's computer and steal one's identity. worst case scenario, they can track and steal your banking information if you made online-purchases and deplete your banking funds.

They're basically bogus users that post links onto forums, blogs, etc. They are able to bypass administrator's defenses in preventing unwanted spamming.

hehe, glad i never did.  sometimes, being unsophisticated has its rewards.  i don't know though if it was a reward when i called once for a hotel reservation (from another country), the telephone number of which i got from the internet.  they asked for my credit card number, i said i never give my credit card to strangers.  (truth be told, i consider the credit card that i have as non-existent; never used it, never will.)  that ended my sought-for reservation, hahaha!

Income Potential

A "good" spammer can easily earn $100,000 per year. Spammers work on a piece rate so the more spam they send the higher their income potential. On average 1,000,000 pieces of junk mail sent out will result in 100 "sales" or leads. This in turn generally means big profits for the spammer.

Ronnie Scelson is currently one of the most notorious spammers in the world. He claims to have covert agreements (sometimes referred to as pink agreements) with ISPs to allow him to send the 84,000,000 pieces of junk e-mail per day that he claims to. Typical of spammers/virus authors, he sees nothing wrong with his "business".

hehehe! very wise and prudent of you, madame isles. its never wrong to be conservative in financial matters (better to be koripot and still financially safe than a galante pero wa jamoy kwarts sa banko central..bwahaha!)

when i was in philippines 2 years ago, when i was touring the famous "SM CEBU", one worker at the MAC store was asking if i was from the 'states ( i was there with my cousin jing , as she was looking for a laptop, and i suggested to her we take a look at the MAC models), and he was joking around to me, "oh sir, you're form america, you can use your credit card!" ning katawa pod raba tong tawhana. ingon ra ko, "i never buy on credit. always on debit or cash." ning hilom. it's never good to use credit on anything because 1) you get charged %, and 2) its not safe to use one's credit card when in a foreign country (many horrible credit theft stories out there).

so i applaud you, madame isles, for not using your credit card ! ;)

more so in the philippines, lorenz, when some items have different prices for purchases with cash or with a credit card.

i've become a familiar face in a certain bank (my source of this credit card; it goes with the deposit) when i told them once (with much drama) to never charge me for service over an unused credit card.  they waived the annual fees, much to my joy.

it's been months since i opened my email address, that's why.  it's been hacked.  i know it's been hacked because some friends had revealed that they've been getting sleazy materials from me and they're wondering whether i've already been employed by hugh hefner as his latest bunny.  (ugh.  despite his having been reported as dead many times and as many times he's been resurrected, i doubt if he would mistake a tarsier for a bunny.)

I think wala na ma hack like kasagaran maka ingon nga nakuha ang password, mas dako ang chance nga mail spoofing

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Example lang ni ha but pwede ra jud mahimo, magsend ko og mail sa mga members diri using admin at tubagbohol dot com nga email add and obviously dili jud na akoa nga email add and ang madawat sa mga recipient is ang admin jud nga email add and pwede pa maconfigure nga inig reply nimo sa mail sa lain email add padung.

Ang solution ani sa mga nag host og email is kanang gitawag og SPF records but dili tanan hosting naa ingon ani so mao na ma spoof.
