Carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming and climate change. They come from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas for energy, transportation, and industry. To cut carbon emissions, we need to use less energy, switch to renewable sources of energy, improve energy efficiency, and protect natural resources that absorb carbon dioxide.
Some ways to cut carbon emissions are¹²³⁴:
- Use public transportation, bike, walk, or carpool instead of driving alone.
- Turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Use LED bulbs and smart power strips.
- Buy energy-efficient appliances and electronics. Look for the Energy Star label.
- Install solar panels or wind turbines on your home or business. Or buy green power from your utility company.
- Eat less meat and more plant-based foods. Avoid food waste and compost organic waste.
- Buy local and organic products. Avoid products with excess packaging or palm oil.
- Plant trees and gardens. Avoid deforestation and land degradation.
- Support policies and initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Join a climate action group or campaign.
