For quite some time, we accepted without much of a thought that Loay, is in reference to an old bridge that is so frail (Loay) or the swaying nipa palms (loay-loay).
Then quite sometime too, i met Lina Sagaral Reyes, who corroborated my theory about such a funny or "steamy" name for a town.
There used to be a big palm tree that was a reference point in Hinawanan, she said. Under the "lubi sa Moros", people would usually sit on hot summers, display their wares under the shades, being the old town.
Old poeple, according to her research called it "Lubi sa Moros"
That big palm tree resembles the one you can find at the side plaza in Dauis, the marvelous tree (data palm) or as the Spaniards would call it, Mariveles.
Lubi sa Moros, in arabic, is Loay.
