Puzzle: What is this a photo of?
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:49:31 AM »
Can anyone help decipher the text on this banner? It comes from a small barrio of Guindulman.
Clues:
  • note the symbol of the anchor and cross above a heart
  • a similar flag in the same barrio contains the text 'M.A.S.B.' and 'Pagtoo, Paglaum ug Paghigugma'

Anyone who can successfully work it out will get a free digital pdf of Lonely Planet Visayas.

It's not that hard, Mr. PerezKelly. The words below are the 3 words you mentioned, and MASB are the initials of the words comprising the words above, which can easily be read, actually. Clue: MASB has reference to the Philippine Revolution.

Good luck!

OK lang. Ang bandera gikan sa Biabas, Guindulman. Naa didto primerong Iglesia Independiente Filipina sa Bohol (1902) ug usab mga descendants nga rebels, similar sa mga katipunan.
Sorry my Visayan is not so good.

Thanks hubag, you win the pdf anyway. Send me an email at pierskelly AT yahoo.it so I can send it to you.
-Still not sure about what the 'M' in MASB stands for (Mga?) but I'll think about it over the weekend!

Thanks, Mr. PerezKelly! Yes, you apparently still need to work a little bit more on your Visayan, otherwise you could easily have made out the phrase ANG MGA ANAK SA BALINTAWAK. Evidently, the initial article is omitted in the acronym. Happy weekend!

Ang maayo ini nga makuhaan unta ug DNA aron mahibaw-an ug ganus-a ang panapton [cloth] gihabol o "knitted".

you mean Carbon -14 dating;

Carbon-14, 14C, or radiocarbon, is a radioactive isotope of carbon with a nucleus containing 6 protons and 8 neutrons. Its presence in organic materials is the basis of the radiocarbon dating method to date archaeological, geological, and hydrogeological samples. Carbon-14 was discovered on 27 February 1940, by Martin Kamen and Sam Ruben at the University of California Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, although its existence had been suggested by Franz Kurie in 1934.

while DNA is;

Deoxyribonucleic acid ( /diˈɒksɪˈraɪboʊnuˈkliɪk ˈæsɪd/ (help·info)) (DNA) is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and some viruses. The main role of DNA molecules is the long-term storage of information. DNA is often compared to a set of blueprints or a recipe, or a code, since it contains the instructions needed to construct other components of cells, such as proteins and RNA molecules. The DNA segments that carry this genetic information are called genes.

both infos are form Wikipedia.

perezkelly, my question is how did you come to this piece of cloth? This might be of big historical meaning/importance not only for the Bol-anons but for the whole country for sure.

Yes, the community of Biabas is predominantly Eskaya but the flag itself is not. This flag and other artefacts are kept very safe and not always shown to outsiders.
@Way Nada: (Sorry my Visayan is not up to scratch) It would be a good idea for experts to investigate this flag but I think it important that this should be done respectfully - museums are not always the safest places either. Over the years, a number of artefacts have disappeared from Bohol's provincial museum and the library. The slogan suggests a katipunan origin for the flag, but according to Marianito Luspo, there is no evidence that the katipunan were ever organised on Bohol. Sabas Ligones is the only probable link between the katipunan and the Bohol fighters. Also, I'm pretty sure that carbon dating cannot give you such a specific date and recent date. It would be necessary to prove that the flag was produced in the late 1890s - deciding its actual provenance would be even harder.

Reply:

I believe the people who made this flag are the followers of the Katipunan under Aguinaldo. I don't think they are the Eskaya... but I believe they were the loyal followers of Pedro Samson who was the chief of the militia formed during the erstwhile Republic of Bohol. My uncle used to say sometimes in the 1960's; "I wonder where is Pedro Samson now. He was the militia leader who defied the American occupation of Bohol."

Being the chief of Bohol government's militia Pedro Samson was also offered the same post to serve as the chief constable of the police force formed by the Americans. He ran to the hills with his men and fought the American occupiers. He was caught and was amnestied to serve again and ran again to the hills. The defiance of Samson against the Americans is like the defiance against the government experienced by Gringo Honasan. The last time he defied the American authority and went to the hills he was not heard of again by the town folks. Pedro Samson was never found either he was summarily executed by the Americans or he died hiding in towns not reached by the Americans. He was a Boholano hero but the American authority in Bohol erased his exploits and heroism.

I can conjecturize when the Americans started burning barrios in their mopping operations where Pedro Samson was believed to be hiding like for example  when they burned barrio Lonoy of Jagna... maybe Samson and his band of rebels were there and ran farther east until they reached Guindulman.

This Katipunan flag is the evidence that the information in the diary of George Percival Scriven is correct that the Boholanos were loyal to Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo.

According to his diary; Every town that Maj. Hale and George Percival Scriven went... in every government building in a show of loyalty and reverrence the Boholanos hanged the picture of Aguinaldo. It was the initiative of the presidente of Bohol Bernabe Reyes who sought the help of Florentino Torres [The name does it sound a bell?] for Pres. Aguinaldo to grant independence and make Bohol a republic.
