Tita, when Stacy and I first met 3 years ago, she did not know how to speak or understand Bol-anon, and I did not know how to speak or understand Ilonggo. Pero, now, she knows how to speak Bol-anon and she understands it pod. Ako, medyo medyo ra ko sa Ilonggo hahaha. She is smarter than I, i am a slower learner than her.

Karon, og mo adto mi sa Filipino restaurant when I speak Cebuano to some of the people in the stores, kahibalo pod ni si babycakes mo join in. She even uses "Indi / Dili " interchangeably now. hahaha.

The last time her dad came to visit, when he asked her for something and she said, 'Dili ko gusto'. Her dad said, "Ano ka ba? Cebuano na gid ikaw?" ha ha ha! ;D

Okay let us be fair about this. First off there are authors out there who are Filipino and they are some of the greatest and most current writers. I have read some magazines on where this author discusses the sensitive mannerisms and the pride here...He said people here are too busy being onion skinned and always looking for an apology and said this is one of the reasons you do not see progress happening here in Philippines.
I do not think in my own opinion that this topic and this subject matter makes me believe that his comment was racism remarks against the  country itself more in he is using the Philippine country as an example...of those countries in where people are often scared in not being able to speak well in the English vocab department.
I myself I am so hurt when it is my turn at the counter and the one waiting on me is running to help others who had come in after me??? Because she is ashamed to speak to me do to her lack of English speaking experience.  This has happened many times....even people behind me will be waited on before me and that is when I put my foot down realizing that what she is doing has carried on too much and it is more than past time when I should have been waited on....I have also been discriminated against living here as a foreigner...even though I have a permanent residence card...I have been living here 11 long years....I know already what is the Philippines.........you just have to know how to sort out the good and the bad here in order to wade through it all..... Before I have a problem like  heck with so many things here but over the years I have really become use to the habits here.....I laugh at new comer foreign persons coming here and hearing them moan about things I laugh as it reminds me how I use to sound before when I first came here.........What bothered me back in the days was they say it is a very Catholic dominant country.....but, with being a a sample dominant member of a Catholic church here.....I was expecting people to follow Gods ways as in having good manners at all times, having honesty in your heart and truly loving people and the things that surround you...So when you see someone one in a Catholic dominant nation and they are not setting a good example it is as if contradictory to say that this is a Catholic dominant country because if it were true i use to think that there should be no corruption, starvation and the other unsightly conditions and things that go on here....I use to think that sisters and brothers should look out for themselves and others especially those in more need...That to me is being dominant about being Catholic and being one nation....it was hard for me to digest this phrase; "A DOMINATE CATHOLIC COUNTRY"......You think of beautiful things when you hear these words put together as if it is to be a paradise in God's country.....
11 years ago you did not have as many religious choices as you do now a days here....I have noticed more people picking up in other churches aside from the Catholic church's here..... Religion should be a choice a personal choice at that it should be followed and one should be disciplined to follow what his beliefs are.
I admit I have plenty of friends here who are super sweet..... I have met people here who are also users, scammers, killers, drug addicts.....people who do really mean things to others have not even deserved to have someone done mean at them...but these people are not just here they can be found world wide....My dream and it is my biggest dream is to see the Philippines no longer a third world to see things much better then they are now and that includes services and government as well.
I would love to see the people here not looy as some are now. It is important for people to work on better attitude, for themselves so that they feel good enough to not sit back and allow things to be the way they are at present. It is going to have to take some strong heads to start breaking the ice for the better of everyone...Philippines is physically attractive the people are sweet when you meet the right ones.....this place has some pretty fantastic potential that others should be paying attention and focusing on.....so it can move ahead and advance.... :)

Priscilla,

It is good to dream big, to think about the potential our people have, the possibilities the country and the people have. I have no doubt that the country is progressing in the right direction. The Philippines, a nation that just received independence some 65 years ago, has achieved and overcome a plethora of political, military and economic situations in its recent history. I hope and pray that the Philippines and the Filipino people continue towards its march of Progress.

I trust in the character and the potential of the Filipino, which I am very proud to be part of. :)

Mabuhay ang Pilipino ! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas !

Sincerely,
Lorenzo

and there are also many looy people in the u.s.  one difference is that there hardly are foreign correspondents in the u.s. who would choose to focus on new york's homeless, as a case in point.

what i'm saying is that what we're complaining about our wretched poor actually also holds true in a majority of countries.  we will stop being third world if the western world stops giving us that monicker because, for heaven's sake, after the cold war, is there still a second world nowadays?

How many of you send  American goods back here? I would love to send home presents from here in a big Balikbayan box how you all can from there to here...but here it would cost more and no one honors such a service that I have been able to find but Johny Air and it is expensive as all heck.....

You both make a good point; Isles is pointing out that even in a country like the United States where the GDP per capita is over $40,000 , still there are poor amongst the people living in the United States. Priscilla makes a point in indicating that there are more Americans or Pinoy-Americans that send goods back home to the Philippines via balikbayan boxes. Both point out a strong point and see things in different sides of the coin.

Yes, Filipinos do recieve balikbayan boxes from their friends and relatives abroad, however, this is done so (accepted and received) with open arms and in recognition of the sacrifices of the relatives abroad to help family members back home. I prefer to implement a meta-analysis of the situation. The humanistic drive to help one's fellow is a universal trait. The Pinoys abroad who send balikbayan boxes as well as money back home to the Philippines do so in an attempt to better the lives of their relatives, and loved ones. It is the same driving force that propelled these Pinoys to g abroad in the first place. The same kind of drive is seen in the Americans who partake in food drive and donation drives to help communities that have poor and homeless who are stricken in the streets. The very same drive that compels hospitals to provide MEDICAID for homeless or poor patients who cannot afford to pay medical care in the United States. Wherever we go, there will always be poor, that is just a fact. What we do about it, is what matters.

Thank You, Isles and Priscilla, for making your points. Thanks for sharing with all of us two different points of view.

Sincerely,
Lorenzo

In fact, we are commanded by The Lord when he said , " There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land." (Deuteronomy 15:11)

I love this one... tinuod gyud ka day.

I am living here for almost 11 years....no matter how nice how caring or how many nice friends I have here....Foreigners are also treated here discriminatory....at times....We are sometimes thinking wow this is a sensitive culture...okay for them to do certain behaviorism but lord forbid if a foreigner does the same sometimes offensive actions of the Filipino (double standard), look at places to buy things at with no menu and no price tags....We often talk among ourselves in groups at the malls comparing news and experiences and touching basis with one another some of the male foreigners tell me that some Filipino think this is the only country that exists in the world...It is all about being a Pinoy.... I ask them then why do they stay here and why do they take GF Filipino.......the answers vary....Look at adoption fees in the country foreigners pay more to file a case versus Filipino?   And go through the same amount of hearings....in a speedier amount of time.....but the foreigner has 10 times more requirements to obtain in comparison to Filipino in the court systems here...some people here will even cut in front of foreigners who are already at the counter next to be served and if you call the one cutting in line in front of you you get looked at like oh well....Last night three students from USA standing in line at the counter they were being cut in front of and they had no qualms telling the ones in front to have some manners...Look at Filipino abroad they have communities of they're own race....one time I tried to have an expat group here.....but the people were so appalled about the ideal as if it were ganging up on the Filipino...do we as Americans say that about Filipino's having their communities....I think not....Racism is not just about being victimized as one nationality....racism comes in all forms and all nationalities...

This could be true here in the US too. Although you get varying degrees of uber tolerance to people saying something. It depends on where you are. In the less educated and travelled populations of the US, the people are rude too...rude enough to ask you to your face if you're a mail-order bride...or ask if we have plates, forks and spoons in the Philippines ! I've been to places where big, fat, unkempt ugly American ladies stared at me up and down, sniffed and refused to look at me while she waited on our table, once at a Cracker Barrel in Georgia and another at a barbeque place in South Carolina !  ::)  On the other hand, when you are in educated company, the experience is total different. The conversations are meaningful, and there is mutual respect where nobody thinks that they are above anybody.

While there are Pinoys who think that Philippines is the end-all, be all, there's a good number of Americans who think that way as well. You only have to turn the TV on to see Americans making idiots of themselves and recording it too.  Same goes for pinoys...Anybody remember that air headed "actress" who actually tried to put on her lifejacket on a plane as she followed the flight attendant step by step ?  8) ;D

Don't forget, ex pats are not only "suffering" for being expats themselves but unfortunately get lumped in with all the pervs and pedophiles that find their way into the Philippines.(which is lots)  Its unfair, I know, unfortunately, people would sooner believe the bad stuff rather than the good stuff. Both in the US and in the PI. You hardly hear of the good-natured ex pat sending needy kids to school but oh, the whole community will hear about this perv who is banging his wife's 3 teenage sisters who got them all preggers in a New York minute !!! LOL !  Same thing goes here with Filipinas who marry Americans. Even without having seen us or met us, we're already labelled gold diggers, hookers and visa hunters. Even though sometimes, the Pinay's life was easier here in the Philippines rather than the life her American husband can offer her in the US. I know a few who are honestly richer and more educated than their American husbands. Not the norm but there is a good number where the Pinay wife makes more money than the American hubby even if you added hubby's ex wife's income to his, they are still short a few thousand of what Pinay wife makes.  8) Guess we could blame the G.I.s for bringing back hookers and the scammers who really do this stuff. Even if they're probably just 1 for every 100 girls.  :-[

I ask them then why do they stay here and why do they take GF Filipino.......the answers vary....Look at adoption fees in the country foreigners pay more to file a case versus Filipino?   And go through the same amount of hearings....in a speedier amount of time.....but the foreigner has 10 times more requirements to obtain in comparison to Filipino in the court systems here...some people here will even cut in front of foreigners who are already at the counter next to be served and if you call the one cutting in line in front of you you get looked at like oh well....Last night three students from USA standing in line at the counter they were being cut in front of and they had no qualms telling the ones in front to have some manners...

1.) PALAKAS <-- its the case of who they know and probably a case of beer to grease the wheels. The people in the system know they can squeeze more out of foreigners and there is something to squeeze. They know that no matter how hard they squeeze some fellow pinoys, they can't get anything.  As for requirements, I think whoever is a foreigner in a country will have more requirements.  Just think, as a green card holder in the US, you are limited legally compared to a US citizen.

2.) Cutting in line <--- Priscilla dear, I suffer this almost every day in good old Houston with  a good wallop of it this morning. With the exception of people staring, here,if they're not involved, they don't give a crap while the aggravated parties give each other the bird and yell at each other. They come in all races and shapes too. White people, Black people, Asians, Euros etc.  Not as bad in the more affluent areas of town but darn, even a Home Depot or a Best Buy in the poorer part of town have super crappy service, rude ignorant associates and to top it off, they make you see and feel how they don't give a rat's ass about customer service. Really go out of their way, I think.  DOn't know which is worse, but still frustrating all thesame.

Ermmmm....remember, a good number of Filipinos are poor. Yes, its frustrating, but if you can't beat it, join in and be good at the game ! :D ;) I remember being in Hong Kong where they seem ruder than anywhere I've been in my life. They shove you out of the way, scurry and when they hit you, they don't even apologize, just look away. Guess if they don't see you, you don't see them.  You can't speak Greek to an Inuit, so when I had the chance to shove back, I did so with gusto. Fair Play Senior ? hahaha ! ;D

Look at Filipino abroad they have communities of they're own race....one time I tried to have an expat group here.....but the people were so appalled about the ideal as if it were ganging up on the Filipino...do we as Americans say that about Filipino's having their communities....I think not....Racism is not just about being victimized as one nationality....racism comes in all forms and all nationalities...

Wow, this I never knew. When I was still living there, there were always Euro communities in Bohol. They stick together, specially the Germans and Swedes. Complete with their flags on their front porch.  Although, I wonder who were appalled, the other ex pats ? or the Filipino community ?

For Ex Pats who just want to enjoy retirement, I don't see why there's a problem with having an Ex Pat American community in Bohol, Lord knows there's quite a few. Most of them decent family men who could be a force for good if they work together.

Now, if the men in question are in the Philippines for some unwholesome reason aka sex tours, bad behavior and perverts,  ;D OF COURSE, they would NOT want to be in a community with decent people. They know that while most Pinoys won't call them out, you guys might and will. THey also know that if a Pinoy without any money were to file a case against them, its not gonna stick unless its really blatant, but they know most fellow Ex Pats have the money, education and resources to hold their butts accountable for their actions so they stay away.  ;)

Been wanting to do that but it'll cost an arm and a leg. A jumbo 24x18x18 from Houston to Bohol is $115. A small, itty bitty box from Bohol to Florida cost me almost $50. Law of supply and demand I guess :-( wish there was a reasonable forwarder though...

I understand what you're trying to say, but you have to look at the situation, Priscilla. Statistically speaking, most of the Pinoy-Americans have relatives in the Philippines , Pinoy-Americans also make more money than their relatives in the Philippines, so it would be improbable for the relatives who are in need to be sending boxes to relatives in the United States , who are, incidentally, better of in terms of finance.

I understand your point that it may not be common for Pinoys in the Philippines to be sending balikbayan boxes to relatives in the United States, but one has to look at the situation.

In my honest opinion, there is nothing wrong with Americans and Pinoy-Americans sending money or boxes back to the Philippines. In fact, its commendable and honorable. Giving back to those who are in need and helping friends and relatives is always commendable and encouraged by scripture and also ethically and morally.

Regards,
Lorenzo

Murag kitang tanan predisposed man ani heheheh ! depende lang ug unsaon nato pag handle.

kinsa tong mahinumdum anang mga storya nga gasugod ug  : "Diha toy Amerkano, Insik ug PIlipino ga hinambugay...."  diba ang ending kay Pinoy jud ang daug  :-P

You are absolutely correct, Alice. We are all predisposed to prejudice and racism. The best way is to recognize one's prejudices , identify what causes one's behavior, try to ameliorate it. The mature way to mitigate instances of prejudice is to recognize it, and then to implement cogntive and behavioral modification.

That is the psychiatric / psychological directive. :)

ALYCXS.....ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha you made my morning I laughed all the way through what your saying....I agree with most of what you said.....Please let me know the name of the place that you were able to send a box from here in Bohol??

I think the community of Europe is not the same as before. I have noticed the turn-over is more now on Korean nationals working and living here especially in the Dive areas and tourist sites...

Maybe eventually I am going to be moving back to US but of course coming back here despite the tolerances but I have grown use to having tons of fun here actually and when something bad goes a muck here you had better bet I want what is best and I will defend to keep the peace here...I before moving here Lorenzo friend payed for many box's to be sent here in Bohol...indeed....but I have earned so much in memories, plaques of appreciation for guest speaking, judges awards...etc....that i do not want to leave behind....and taking on a plane is limited... believe me after eleven long years in a fun place and having done all the neat things as I have here....I am hoping if all goes well I am going home...to get some fresh air see my family and bring my things my memories and have a show and tell of how my life was here my accomplishments and believe me there are many....So you can see why me as an American whats to be like a pack rat =D and take my loot home that means so much to me here...

it was in 2004, I tried to ship a box of presents for my in-laws in FL via the post office. They wanted me to unwrap everything to make sure there was no "contraband" then I had to re-wrap it and reseal the box and then send it.  The post office near the old city hall.

in the more recent years 2009-2011, Mama pays anywhere around Php 2000 to Php 3000 when she sends me care packages of soaps, tabliya and amoxicillin and the occasional well-wrapped dried fish  and ginamos 8) a little 8x8x8 box.

Although... if you have a friend in the Navy, they might be able to help get your loot home. Either that or someone who works for an oil company. I know they move them all over the world so they should have a good deal when it comes to freight. I could be wrong. Hubby works for Cathay Pacific and we don't get squat...not even a poke in the eye. :-(
