ha ha ha ! perting katawa ko sa imong response, Alice. In regards to that particular patient, I just looked at him, checked on his charts and walked away. Kining mga itom nga na raised sa "streets" they have been indoctrinated to think a certain way and to speak a certain way, kuan ilang lifestyle , agresibo kaayo. Given, many of them grew up in very abusive homes and are living in an environment that is saturated with a plethora of criminal activity (drugs, murders, gangbang shootings, prostitution, etc).
For the most part, ma luoy ko sa ilang upbringing, but there are times (and this particular incident was one of them) where I had an urge to say something.
You are right tho, Alice. There are a great many African-Americans who perpetuate their lifestyle and do not raise their way of living. I even had a conversation one time with an African-American nurse who said to me, "Doc, i really respect y'all Filipinos because you all are very hard working."
And that is right, the great many Filipinos that come to the United States work hard and strive to better their living conditions. The difference , in my view, is that Filipinos have a natural yearning to succeed. Many of us do not have the opportunity in the Philippines or the opportunity is very limited, and when placed here in the United States, we are able to sprout and bloom.
My gf , for example, comes from very humble beginnings. Her parents grew up in Iloilo (her mother) and Bacolod (her father) , and they were very poor. But when they came to the United States (her father is an Engineer and her mother is an RN), they blossomed. Now, her family own a very large Home Health Care Company that employs 30 nurses and sees hundreds of patients. My gf is an M.D , like myself. Both of us are product of the 'Brain Drain', but the opportunity we had to blossom was because of our parents immigration to the United States.
That is the difference. Filipinos strive. No matter where we are.
