Winning in a derby is an ordinary feat if it happens once in a blue moon. But winning it in quick succession?

Especially if the young breeder is into it just past the beginner's luck stage.

This is the experience and the excitement felt by Mabini Mayor Stephen Rances when his entry Skena was one of the derby champions of the 4-cock P400,000 purse derby sponsored by the Lim Juanay Memorial Cockpit Arena last December 18-20.

Considered one of the biggest derbies in terms of championship windfall, Mayor Rances' entry crushed all opponents single handedly featuring his Roundhead and Sweater crosses.

Asked about the parentage of his breed, Mayor Rances said a cousin from the States sent him a trio (one brood cock and two brood hens) and started experimenting his own stable of game birds.
