Holdup in our frontyard
« on: June 10, 2008, 08:32:55 PM »
Today, I was shaken by a live report I heard over DYRD on a robbery incident in Dao.

I stopped everything I did when I first heard the place of the incident. I was totally shaken when the lady victim was interviewed. She sounded like our landlady. In fact, she was our landlady.

I immediately grabbed the phone to call my wife. In sheer panic, I had to dial about five times because I couldn't quite get the numbers right. My wife happened to be at the HNU campus then, waiting for the kids. She was completely unaware of the incident.

The holdup happened at 8:45 AM in front of the gasoline stand operated by the couple who owns the place we are renting temporarily which is adjacent to the gasoline stand. The amount taken was P240,000 plus, which was their sales over the 3-day weekend and holiday. The incident took place in front of a number of people, who were apparently unaware of what was going on. The couple was already in the car, ready to go to the bank to deposit their sales, when they were stopped by a motorcycle-riding threesome. One of them, a guy whose face was covered in white shirt, alighted and pointed a gun at our landlady. The guy apparently knew where the money was. Sensing no resistance from the couple, he just casually grabbed the bag containing the sales.

Last week, my wife told me that the landlady had confided to have caught one of his gasoline boys hiding paper bills in his shoes and promptly dismissed him. I had somehow foretold something like this would happen. In fact, I mentioned to my wife such premonition when she first related to me this incident.

Today, DYRD commentators have surmised that this robbery was an inside job, since the operation seemed to have been carried out with the help of someone who knows the movement of the couple.

When the deadly rampage of a knife-wielding Japanese in Akihabara broke the news last Sunday, my family was worried tremendously because this place is where I usually get off when I go to Tokyo. I didn't know I would sooner be shaken by a terrible incident so close to home in what I thought was a safe Tagbilaran City.

I have already told my wife to look for another place. Please help me pray that we find a safe place closer to school. Pray as well that the case will be solved and the perpetrators meted justice. Let's pray that people will not resort to violent means to tide over the economic crisis.

Ben, we are living in dangerous times. Whether we're in Japan or in the Philippines, bad things happen to both good and bad people. I read the stabbing rampage in Tokyo. The murderer said "he was tired of living." Here is a guy who lives in the second wealthiest nation of the world, but tired of living.

In our country, we hear, read, see reports of robbery and all sorts of crimes. Our country is poor and can never become as rich as Japan, but we are confronted with a different face of evil. What is our option now?

In the U.S., we read reports of young students shooting students and teachers in campuses. Where shall we go?

Ben, be comforted with what Psalm 91 says:

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Hi Mike,

Thanks a lot. I am deeply comforted by these passages. My wife seems unruffled by this incident, claiming protection from God in Psalm 23. You are right, there is no place in the world that is free from the grip of evil. I find solace in the thought that no physical harm was inflicted on anyone. Still, I advised her to take the precaution of finding a safer neighborhood.

Hi Sir Benne, I myself is a victim of this vicious incident.  I just got off work from a drug store (with only a minimum salary per hour) when it happened.  as i was closing the door of the jeep, getting ready to start it, this black man, yanked the door open then started punching me in my face, chest, and stomach.  i was surprised and in panic.  he didn't say anything, he just punched me anywhere he liked.  i fought back because i was thinking he was trying to knock me down and bring me somewhere.  there are lots of incidents here where ladies are being abducted and brought somewhere to be raped and killed afterwards.  that's the main reason why i fought.  the man got mad because i fought back.  he then pulled me from the jeep and dragged me so hard to the pavement.  i got so many scrapes and scratches in my knees.  i called for help but with sheer luck, nobody was there.  we were still fighting on the pavement, i kicked him and punched him back.  he was as tall as me, but quite stocky, so i was in no way can match his strength.  anyway, a couple of minutes later, a customer saw us scuffling on the parking lot, he went around the building (the pharmacy where i worked at); almost hitting the guy's car because when he saw that there was a car pulling up on the store's driveway, that was the time that he ran away with my purse.

until now, i am still traumatised.  i am scared to go to the store alone even in broad daylight.  i am not discriminating, but everytime i see a black person, who is as big as that guy who robbed me, it makes me shiver and feel uncomfortable.  my husband has to go with me all the time to the store now because i am not confident to go alone, even in the daytime.

if we can meet sometime in july, i will show you my ugly scar in my left knee, my horrible remembrance of that very bad day.

there is no safer place nowadays i guess, be it here in the US or in the Philippines.   we will just yield everything to God.

Hi willmerit,

I feel so sorry to bring back these ugly memories to you. It must have been so traumatic, having physically fought for your dear life.

I just talked to my wife this morning again. She is full of assurances that things are OK. It seems I am the one traumatized. The fact that our landlady was spared of physical violence is something to thank God for. Indeed, we have to entrust to God our daily safety, wherever we are.

Di man pud siguro interesan ning bike no? Akong mga anak liwat man sa misis nga dark-skinned busa di man mu-stand out pero mag-hinapon lagi ug mag-uban silang tulo. Tagalog ray hibaw-an nila isulti ron.

Dear Sir Benelynne,

I feel sorry to know about the incident occured in connection with your landlady. I understand your side being too upset and much in sorrow.
Important that your Family were not involved to that happenings.  Sir, in every corner of this defective World, we couldn't not really control either it is a natural calamities and/or damages induced by crazy criminals. It is a circle of life and sorry to say...a leak of uncontrolled disturbances.  Prayers and more positive thinking will help to relieve your worries.  I feel your side....a quite hard task being away from love ones. You must have to trust to our saviour for he is always there in time you will call him.  God be with you and your Family. take care....

OT: By the way, had seen a report in the TV that in Japan it is more or less 30,000 people committed suicides due to financial problems. This large number of voluntary victims are more than those who died in car accidents in a year. Grabe diay no!

Hi Bambi,

We are used to seeing, hearing, or reading about crimes, calamities and other untoward incidents occurring in faraway places.

Lately, things seem to be happening closer and closer to our comfort zones.

Even here in Japan, more than a month ago, a young man had run amuck slashing innocent passengers at a train station about 5 km from where I live. Then last Sunday, another young man rammed a 2-ton truck onto a pedestrian-filled street in Akihabara and then came out of the truck randomly attacking people with a survival knife, claiming lives of 7 people and seriously wounding 10 others. Akihabara is the station where I get off whenever I go to Tokyo.

You're right, Japan has probably the highest suicide rate among first world countries. Lately, their mode of suicide, which is fuming themselves with a toxic combination of household detergent and other ordinary chemicals, is also endangering the lives of the neighbors.

The world is going crazy. But God reigns. He's on top of the situation. Let's put our trust in Him.

Hi Mari,

Taud-taud na jud ta. I know incidents like these will concern you kay ingon bitaw sa among landlady, most businesses feel themselves targeted.

The scary part of this incident is that the bank passbook was taken along with the cash, and apparently, a sizable amount is stashed in there. Busa akong gikulbaan di ni ang last nga panghitabo. In fact, I was told this was already the second incident, but the first incident involved only P5000.

Last I heard on radio, Mayor Dan Lim is making a bank loan (Php 12 million) in behalf of the city to purchase more motorcycles in order to improve the mobility of policemen. Magbutang daw pud ug checkpoints sa exit/entry points of the city. Still, with the relentless increase of prices of prime commodities, there will be people driven to desperate means. Busa padayon lang jud ta amping ug ampo.

Hi C2,

I'm sorry to bring the rain on your summer parade. My wife still thinks Tagbilaran is a relatively safe place to live in. Di lang jud nato i-take for granted ang personal safety precautions, because the economic crisis and increasing population especially from outside inevitably give rise to these bad elements.

Hala oi mapang Hesus man ta aning imong balita Nong Benny. Pero I was relieved to hear that your family is ok. Pero sorry to hear about your landlady.
Manghinaot ko nga ang place that your wife picked is safer na. Siguro mas maayo kung palayo lang sa mga duol nga establishments and a safer neighborhood.
And also, maayo bitaw unta matinuod nang imong giingon nga mag increase ug cops sa Tagbilaran kay murag perting daghanang estorya akong nadunggan bahin aning safety measures pero WALAY ACTION.

Amy, what a scary and traumatic story you got there. Oh my, you must be a strong lady to fought back, good for you. Pero still it was pretty ugly. I'm so sorry to hear about this. I hope time will heal you. Just continue to be a very strong lady.

Mari, extra careful lang gyud intawn diha sa imong business and maybe a licensed gun is not a bad idea for your extra protection also.

Belle, your idea of being a low profile when we visit there pohon is not a bad idea at all. In fact mao na akong gihimo adtong last 2006 first visit nako. And I never walked alone, I was always with my group of friends, ALWAYS. Even my high school male classmates volunteered to be my bodyguards pero ming reklamo kay perti daw ko paspasa molakaw, ingon pod ko, unsa may kiay-kiayan maapsan tas mga dautang mata.
Ug tuod, akong bana wala miuban and never will be na. As he always says, better be safe than be sorry.
Sa sunod napod nakong visit pohon, same thing with more extra precautions napod.

The incident is now a front page story of Bohol Chronicle, June 12. I stand corrected in the number of perpetrators. There were only two who carried out the crime so efficiently.

Gas station robbed P240T
By KIT BAGAIPO

Two armed robbers hit a gasoline station in barangay Dao, this city yesterday fleeing with P240,000 in cash.

The couple Felix and Thelma Ayeng, owners of Dao Caltex Gas Station have just boarded their service vehicle to deposit their collections at a bank here about 8:30 a.m. when the still unidentified robbers who were aboard a motorcycle blocked their path.

According to the couple, one of the suspects disembarked from the motorcycle pointing a gun at Thelma who was holding the bag containing the money to be deposited.

The victims could hardly provide police a description of the suspects as they covered their faces with t-shirts and the incident took only a few seconds, according to Thelma Ayeng.

The gun toting suspect approached Thelma without saying a word and went straight to grab the bag which contained the gasoline station's cash collections since Friday.

The lady-victim said she did not attempt to resist the suspect fearing she and her husband will be shot.

Nobody among the gas station employees even noticed the incident, according to the couple. It was only after the suspects fled that the couple called for help.

The 4-day collections were supposed to be deposited last Monday but they were not able to do so since it was a holiday.

Police suspects that the robbers knew the routine of the couple who admitted they usually deposit the preceding day's collection every morning when banks open for business.

The Dao Gas Station does not have a security guard and had been a victim of another robbery several years ago.

The case is now being investigated by the Tagbilaran City PNP Theft and Robbery Section.

nah Bella murag sakto jud akong papa na kelangan jud nako irefresh ahong 'eskrima' expertise ;D Kabalo jud ko sa imo feeling Bella my dear, ma stress jud ko pirmi everytime mosulod nako sa airport sa Pinas labi na sa domestic. manakit ahong liog og lumingilingi og sigi remind ni Steve na ignore all the people selling something to you, open ur eyes and always on the watch...blah blah blah.

kelangan na jud bitaw more police visibility labi na around the streets kay unsaon naman lang if you need help alangan moadto pa sa police station. Mao jud na ako mamiss sa Bangkok kay naay police kada kanto. mao pay moduol nimo og mangutana do u need any help. It's ironic really that i feel a lot safer there than here, in my own country.

Hi Mari,

Having overcome the shock stage, I have now recollected my thoughts and believe that danger exists anywhere. I have also been to Bangkok about 16 years ago when it was already swarming with tourists and people were less money-oriented and friendlier. We, including myself, tend to exaggerate our fears and always think there's greater security elsewhere. But if we read the tourist web posts on Bangkok, they are also teeming with warnings of scams, traps and dangers.

I was actually there at Doy's Grill (?)  beside your cafe the night we saw each other at ICM.

Just a little comfort for us who seem to have blown-up reactions on occasional crimes in our city. The US and Thailand are in the top 8 countries with most murders committed every year. Japan has only 637 murders in the latest year, but its number of suicides at 32,000 is close to top-ranking India's homicide of 37,000.

Crime Statistics > Murders (most recent) by country

Rank   Countries       Amount  (top to bottom)
#1      India:             37,170
#2      Russia:    28,904
#3      Colombia:    26,539
#4      South Africa:    21,995
#5      Mexico:    13,829
#6      United States:    12,658
#7      Venezuela:    8,022
#8      Thailand:    5,140
#9      Ukraine:    4,418
#10      Indonesia:    2,204

im just curious why nothing has been done like more visible police around tagbilaran and the like. daghan naman ta reports on cases like this. at least we will feel a little relieved that the government is doing something and not sleeping on the peoples' safety. makaaffect baya sad ni sa mga investors. gamay ra baya unta na community ang tagbilaran

Hi Benne,

Just let me know if you you require my assistance to find another place to relocate your family.

If you feel Cogon, near cocacola or airport is suitable, I will check if the houses I knew are still vacant. Most of them have gates.

Cogon is a peaceful place compared to any other Baranggays in Tagbilaran.

Note: I did not read the earlier part of this thread and I just assume that you are still searching a house.

Hi Macky,

I would appreciate if you give me the contact numbers so my wife can check them out. But I think it depends on whether the place is low-lying or not or if it is along the drainage path. Yes, we are still looking for another place, preferrably closer to HNU High School.

Benne,

Let me talk to my mother on Saturday weather the house is still available. That is my Aunt's house and she is now residing in CA. From that place, going to HNU is vide Calceta Street, beside Saint Jude Hospital straight up. About one and a half kilometer, you will reach Dampas road, near Suma Kumagay.

There are two other houses my mother mentioned before, but then, we don't know if it is already occupied by now. I will PM you on Saturday evening.

OK kaayo ilang location, kay sila ra man diha. But criminal elements know better, kapin pag naay inside info. Per Bohol Chronicle's last update, the case remains unsolved.

I imagined, Bene san, you wanted to just fly back home right away after you heard the news.  I am really glad they are safe.  Let us always pray for their safety.

And as for the robbers, robbing people, I think is their job.  I will pray though that they realize they feeding their family with food that comes from stolen money is so bad - like they are feeding cursed food worst than food with worms!  The money they stole that had caused so much pain and sorrow from the people who worked hard to have decent livelihood.  I have said it before and I will say it again.  Poverty shouldn't be made as an excuse for people to steal.  There's got to be another way.  I know that.  We've been there.  Magtanom sila'g saging ug kamunggay ug uban pang lagutmon.  Managat pareho sa akong mga uyuan and that entails waking up in the middle of the night para mo adto sa dagat, mag bugsay, managat.  It's not an easy job but that's decent.
