BOHOL, Philippines - Disaster officials are closely monitoring Bohol's Loboc River following the opening of the floodgates of a hydroelectric plant upstream.
Operators of the power plant decided to open the gates due to incessant rains resulting in rising water levels Loboc River, a popular tourist attraction.
Plant Engineer Alfredo Onez said 2 gates were opened at 5:50 a.m. on Thursday (Jan. 27) as water levels hit a critical 31.6 meters.
High water levels could destroy the plant's turbines.
The local disaster council recalled, the last time the dam was opened, downstream communities lost P6 million worth of livelihood.
River cruises along the Loboc River have already been cancelled for the day. The river cruise is a popular tourism attraction of the province.
Bohol's Loboc River has given livelihood to communities near the banks.
