The Bohol ChronicleOne of the suspects in victimizing supermarkets and stores here in the city by using counterfeit checks was arrested by the City PNP last Friday.
The suspect is identified as Remedios Corpuz Bautista, 50 years old, originally from Caloocan City, Metro Manila.
Bautista was caught using fake checks to pay for her groceries bought in one of the supermarkets here last Friday.
The arrest of Bautista came after store owners were alerted on Thursday on the proliferation of counterfeit Department of Education (DepED) payroll checks bearing the name of Landbank of the Philippines.
According to the City PNP, the fake checks paid to different stores here amounted to about P60,000.
Police said the suspects could be part of a bigtime counterfeiting syndicate operating here.
Banks and DepEd Bohol has warned store cashiers to check the signatories of checks paid to them as most of those which turned out fake bare the names and signatures of Eduardo Tamano and Corazon Barientos instead of the authorized signatory, DepEd Bohol Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Elpidio Jala.
