Credit card owners warned vs fraud syndicates

MANILA -- Authorities have warned credit card owners of the resurgence of activities of credit card fraud syndicates as the yuletide season nears.

Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Anti-Fraud and Commercial Crime Division (AFCCD) chief Police Superintendent Benjamin Acorda reminded them to be cautious in using their credit cards when buying things in malls and in transacting via internet.

He said several groups engaged in credit card fraud that are listed in the watch list of the CIDG and the Credit Card Association of the Philippines (CCAP) have become active again in Metro Manila and other nearby provinces.

Acorda particularly warned credit card owners of the modus operandi of credit card fraud syndicates that use skimming access devices, which they have acquired easily because they are being sold in E-bay.

These devices, which they have distributed to some unscrupulous cashiers in different malls, gasoline stations and supermarkets, even installed in ATM machines, are capable of stealing account information of unsuspecting credit card owners, which are then used to clone credit cards.

As the rush for holiday shopping becomes apparent, Acorda warned credit card owners to be careful in handing to cashiers their cards when doing transaction and make sure that they see the way cashiers swipe their cards. He added that this skimming access device is small and handy that some unsuspecting victims have barely noticed that their card was swiped into it by cashiers who are in cahoots with the syndicate.

Acorda cited a recent incident in Cubao, Quezon City, where a suspect member of a syndicate was arrested for using cloned credit card in paying for P14,000 worth of groceries.

He also reminded the public to be cautious in filling up information forms via the internet when doing online purchase using their credit cards. He likewise warned the public from photo copying their credit card, as it can be used to clone their cards.

For those who would become victims of credit card fraud, Acorda said that the CIDG's AFCCD is always ready to help them. He urged the complainants to help the CIDG pursue the case against the syndicate.

He noted that most complainants were unwilling to sign complaints, which eventually led to the dismissal of cases against members of the syndicate that the CIDG has arrested.

Since January this year, the CIDG AFCCD has arrested eight persons in entrapment operations and has filed five anti-fraud charges against the suspects. (SDR/Sunnex) -- http://www.sunstar.com.ph/
