‘HINDI SILA BASTA-BASTA MAGPAPATAW NG DEATH PENALTY’
By Philippine Star: Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa on Monday assured the public that there is nothing to worry about implementing death penalty amid concerns on the country's "flawed" justice system.
In an interview with ANC broadcast journalist Karen Davila on Monday, Dela Rosa said that the death penalty is “allowed” under the Philippine Constitution and he does not see any problem with it.
However, according to Article III Bill of Rights, Section 19 of the Philippine 1987 Constitution, the death penalty shall not be imposed until Congress provides for it in the future for compelling reasons involving heinous crimes.
The Constitution further states that death penalties already imposed must be reduced to “reclusion perpetua” or permanent imprisonment.
Davila pointed out the possibility of the death penalty putting the poor at a disadvantage because of the lack of access to legal assistance and the Philippines’ "flawed" justice system.
Dela Rosa, who recently filed a Senate bill seeking to revive the death penalty on convicted large-scale drug traffickers, nonetheless refuted this statement, saying that he still believes in the Philippine courts.
“Sampal 'yan sa ating mga korte 'pag sabihan nating inefficient sila o hindi nila alam ang ginagawa nila...Hindi sila basta-basta magpapataw ng death penalty,” Dela Rosa said.
