Chip Tsao would go down in the short-term memory of Filipinos, along with Malu Fernandez and the Desperate Housewives slur as one who demeaned hardworking and often harshly treated Filipinos working abroad.

His comment triggered an uproar in the Philippines, with one lawmaker urging Filipinos to boycott Hong Kong for a year.

It took three days for the publishers and editors of HK Magazine to say sorry for the “politically incorrect" column it ran last March 27 following calls from Manila for an apology.

The infamous column by the “best-selling author" called the Philippines nation of servants and even threatened a Filipino maid of being fired should the Philippines finally take over the disputed Spratly Islands.

Asia City Publishing House, HK Magazine's publisher, with office at 301 Hollywood Centre, 233 Hollywood Road in Hong Kong, issued the statement on Monday:

"The publisher and editors of HK Magazine wish to apologize unreservedly for any offense that may have been caused by Chip Tsao’s column dated March 27. HK Magazine has long championed the rights of Filipinos working in Hong Kong. We note that Filipinos have often been unfairly treated in Hong Kong, and that they make an important contribution to this community."

The column had disappeared from the magazine’s Web site as of posting time.

Despite admitting that Tsao’s column was offensive, the publishing company defended that the column was satirical and could be read “in different ways."

“One aspect of satire is that it can be read in different ways. In this particular case, many people have read meanings into this column that were never actually intended."

Tsao wrote in his March 27 column for the HK Magazine that the Philippines has no right to lord over the disputed Spratly Islands because it is "a nation of servants" who shouldn’t “flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter."

Soon Cheap Chow or Chip Tsao will become the Art Bell of China.

Remember folks about Art Bell's story back in 2004 when filipinos got outraged over his discriminating statement on a radio show saying "Filipinos make me puke"? Art Bell repented, issued an apology to Philippine daily inquirer and then got married to a filipina.

This guy Chip Tsao will issue an apology and will marry his maid.

Don't worry so much on petty comments from men like Chip Tsao.

His ignorance and impudence precedes him.

We Filipinos do not have to prove anything to the Chinese. Who cares what they think about us, so long as our families are safe, food on the table, kids in school and getting good grades. What really else matters?

Cheers,
Lorenzo

Tsip Tsao is talking "rubbish".

Finally, China understood the importance of preserving the environment by utilizing garbage or (utilising rubbish in British English).

Just don´t read all the b*** that the international press says, cause for sure has been written by somebody that never met a filipino or haven´t been there or even doesn´t know where Philippines is in a map.

The people that really know about Philippines and have filipino friends think in other different and positive way. ;)

People that write these stupids articles cannot see their own problems and blame the others so they can feel better.

Just be proud of your beautiful country and the great and friendly people that live there.

The filipino people that I have met here in Spain are more friendly and smart than the chinese by far and they speak spanish, english, tagalog and sometimes other dialects like cebuano, ilocano. AMAZING!  :o

The chinese people here is a closed community, don´t want to mix with others and speak poor spanish.

So OK they say "nation of servants", but they are living in poor conditions as almost slaves here sleeping up to 20 in a room...I haven´t met a filipino family living in this conditions so they can start to see their own problems and stop writing b*** of others.

Maraming salamat po for reading

Here is the article of Chip Tsao

The War at Home
By Chip Tsao

The Russians sank a Hong Kong freighter last month, killing the seven Chinese seamen onboard. We can live with that-Lenin and Stalin were once the ideological mentors of all Chinese people. The Japanese planted a flag on Dioy Island. That's no big problem-we Hong Kong Chinese love Japanese cartoons, Hello Kitty, and shopping in Shinjuku, let alone our round-the-clock obsession with karaoke.

But hold on-even the Filipinos? Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary. This is beyond reproach. The reason: There are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as HK$3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don't flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.

As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell everyone of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.

Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her Government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.

Oh yes. The Government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout 'China, Madam/Sir' loudly whenever they hear the word "Spratly". They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, "Long live Chairman Mao!" at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I'm not sure if that's going a bit too far, at least for the time being.

Maring, it's not just me who said to ignore this guy.  There's Keko, Tita Sol, Tita Lee and others pa.  And the article that Hazel posted is the original article - the article that caused all of these uproar.  And I supposed he apologized already or that he must have been fired?  We don't know.  Maybe just keeping his cool until next time that he can fire his tirades again!

This chipmunk tsao guy makes a living of his sarcastic articles so we are actually adding to his "popularity" by all these reactions.  That's why I said he is just one ignorant person because, before he opened his mouth, he should have had known that his people shipped in container vans his own people to work in America.  If he didn't know, the container van landed in SF fort!

Somebody said to boycott HK products.  I really disagree in that aspect because for one, this chip's statement does not represent the whole of HK's people, although we already have kind of generalization how Chinese behaves.  In any case, our Pinoy housemaid in Cheap Chip's household, whom he claimed is an International Politics degree holder, should not suck all this up.  If Louisa  is being insulted to the nth degree by this cheap guy, Louisa should depart from chip's house and fight for what she believed in. Oh, but she must have a contract with chip guy so maybe our consulate can help her because no one should put up with mental abuse like we thought Louisa is going through everyday with this chip guy.  Or, any Filipinos for that matter.

Hay sakit lang sa dughan because some of our countrymen will just absorb all these abuse for lack of better opportunities in our own country or somewhere else.

MANILA, Philippines - Following calls from Manila for an apology, the Hong Kong based-magazine that ran a column demeaning the Philippines as a country of "slaves" has said sorry for the "politically incorrect column."

Asia City Publishing House, HK Magazine's publisher, with office at 301 Hollywood Centre, 233 Hollywood Road in Hong Kong, issued the statement three days after the controversial column came out.

"The publisher and editors of HK Magazine wish to apologize unreservedly for any offense that may have been caused by Chip Tsao’s column dated March 27," the statement read.

"HK Magazine has long championed the rights of Filipinos working in Hong Kong. We note that Filipinos have often been unfairly treated in Hong Kong, and that they make an important contribution to this community," it added.

Despite admitting that Tsao’s column was offensive, the publishing company defended that the column was satirical and could be read “in different ways."

“One aspect of satire is that it can be read in different ways. In this particular case, many people have read meanings into this column that were never actually intended."

Deputy Consul General Kira Danganan earlier demanded an apology from Tsao who had insulted more than 127,000 Filipinos working in Hong Kong as domestic helpers.

“While Mr. Tsao may have intended his column to be a piece of satire, he has miserably miscalculated in this endeavor," Danganan said in a statement on Monday. “Mr. Tsao and Asia Publishing owe the Filipino community in HK a formal apology for the grave disrespect they have shown."

Tsao wrote in his March 27 column for the HK Magazine that the Philippines has no right to lord over the disputed Spratly Islands because it is "a nation of servants" who shouldn’t “ flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter."

China has a long-standing claim over the islands which lie at the South China Sea. -

It is interesting to read such an article.

And to know that it was politically motivated, despite the claims by the publishing company's refutation of it being merely 'satirical'. I scoff at such impudence, to think that we, the Filipino community can be easily dismissed and accept such two-sided poise.

Nonetheless, the damage has already been done, and the effect manifested after the cause.

This is one of the reasons why I am a staunch proponent of closer relations between Manila and Washington D.C.

It is only through Philippine diligence and the power and authority it has in its claims through a strategic alliance with the United States of America, that China dares not intervene in the region militarily.

Long Live Philippine-American Brotherhood, and to the continuity of our Strategic Alliance!

The Chinese can only smirk knowing that the Philippines has a blanket claim on the Spratlys, knowing that Uncle Sam supports Manila. All the way.

To Mr. Tsao, cheers to you!
And for the Filipinos and Americans, cheers to our powerful relationship ;)

I believe its got something to do with our Education system. We were tought by our teachers since grade school to study hard so when you graduate, you will earn your living as a worker. Our educational system pre-programed every students to become 'servants' and workers after graduation.

No school in this country is teaching students to study hard and build a company after graduation.

One time, I was outsourcing a product from Hong-kong for one of our marketing activity. When I called the company, the owner was travelling and his 16 year old daughter was left to attend international calls and querries. To my surprise, she is well rehearsed on their companies operation. I was dumbfounded on how well she know about trading at that tender age.

I am sad that even in our own country, you can find old/retireable people still working laborious tasks.

This is actually an eye opener to all Pinoys. You are right if you say Truth Hurts.

I remembered the story of the Koreans. When thier country was torn by decades of civil war and became the poorest country in Asia. As humanitarian assistance, Germany and Austria and other European countries offered jobs to thier working class to help rebuild thier country. Instead of becoming cheap labor forever, they acquired technology from their host country, went home and established thier own factories to export household products. They used the technology acquired from Mercedes Benz to build Hyundai, technology from Grundig TV to build Samsung and L.G. and other leading products you can see in the market today. This is called technology transfer. They have not wasted what they have learned and they used initiative instead of blaming their corrupt government then.

what's wrong with being at the service of others?
the only thing wrong i see here is that our workers don't receive their due.
you may be working inside or outside your country, the meaning of
progress is mute when workers (blue collar esp) are abused and taken
advantage to.

MANILA, Philippines -- Controversial Hong Kong columnist Chip Tsao has apologized for the remarks he made in his satirical commentary on the Spratlys issue wherein he ended up offending the Filipino community instead of amusing them.

"I have meant no harm whatsoever and it was never my intention to insult people or humiliate the Filipino community or people," Tsao said in his apology broadcast on the Radio TV Hong Kong website on Tuesday.

Tsao said if his column had been read "as a whole piece," it would be understood as "a bit of a self mockery and satire against the arrogance of the Hong Kong employers."

"And there've been a lot of cases like that," Tsao said.

He continued: "And if you read the column as more or less as a mini-drama, I think it would be better understood...People know this...English is a global language and is open to different interpretations by different people in the world.

"If some people have interpreted my column in that way I think... I very much regret it and I wish to apologize to them and I re-emphasize that it was never my intention to do that."

Tsao's article titled "The War at Home" and published on the widely circulated HK Magazine last March 27 referred to the Philippines as a "nation of servants."

"You don't flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter," Tsao said.

Philippine Deputy Consul General, Kira Danganan-Azucena, earlier said Tsao had crossed the line in his article even if it was meant to be a satire.(inquirer.net)

Despite offers of apology on a controversial article which was deemed racist by many Filipinos, the ban on Hong Kong writer Chip Tsao from entering the Philippines remains, the Philippines’ top immigration official said.

Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said Tsao himself would have to apply to Philippine authorities to have the ban lifted.

“Tsao can request from the [Philippine] Consulate sa Hong Kong who will then communicate to DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs),” said Libanan in an interview Wednesday.

Libanan said the DFA would inform the Bureau of Immigration if the Tsao has been removed from the blacklist.

The immigration commissioner earlier said Tsao will only be removed from the immigration blacklist if he issues a public apology for the derogatory article he wrote about Filipinos.

Libanan issued on Monday night the order placing Tsao in the immigration blacklist for being an undesirable alien.

“This is our manifestation of disgust against the racial slur and insult committed by Mr. Tsao against us as a people,” Libanan said in a statement after announcing the issuance of the blacklist order.

Libanan also chided Tsao for his “arrogance and disrespect to the country and the Filipino people.”

Malacañang meanwhile is taking a wait and see stance on the apology of Tsao

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said they are still considering his apology and whether or not they should accept it.

“Different interpretations”

The DFA on Wednesday confirmed that Hong Kong writer Chip Tsao has issued an apology on television in China’s Special Administrative Region.

In a text message to abs-cbnNEWS.com, the DFA said it received the information about Tsao’s apology from the report by the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong.

“The following is excerpt of Mr. Chip Tsao's interview aired 7 p.m. last night at ATV, a major local TV channel: ‘I realized that I had crossed the line...I now offer my public apology’",” the DFA stated in the text message.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported Monday that Tsao allegedly never meant to insult Filipino domestic workers.

"The article was never intended to be insulting to the Filipino domestic workers," Tsao told AFP.

He added in the report that "English, being a global language, is open to different interpretations by those who come from various cultural backgrounds”.

"Has anyone been deeply upset, it was never my intention and I feel sorry," Tsao was quoted in the report.

On Monday, Tsao’s publisher and editors had issued an apology for their writer’s column. In their letter, the Asia City Publishing Group in Hong Kong apologized “unreservedly for any offense that may have been caused by Chip Tsao's column dated March 27".

HK Magazine explained that they have long been championing the rights of Filipinos working in Hong Kong.

"We note that Filipinos have often been unfairly treated in Hong Kong, and that they make an important contribution to this community," said HK Magazine.

HK Magazine added that Tsao's column entitled "The War At Home" was satirical.

Tsao earned widespread disapproval among Filipinos for his column “War At Home” published online by the HK Magazine on March 27.

In his column, Tsao called the Philippines a “nation of servants” unworthy to lay claim on the disputed Spratlys Island.

Tsao also made derogatory remarks against Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong.

He said he summoned his Filipino domestic assistant named Louisa and gave her a harsh lecture that Spratlys Island belongs to China. He even threatened to send her home if war breaks out between the Philippines and China.

The Spratlys Island is being disputed by China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Concerned about the safety of Tsao’s maid, the Philippine Consulate set out to locate her. They discovered that Tsao had no Filipino domestic worker under his employ. Louisa was actually working for Tsao’s father for 14 years now.

Continuing protest

Meanwhile, the group United Filipinos in Hong Kong is preparing to mobilize the Filipino community there on Sunday, April 5th for a protest against the article and writer.

On Monday, Tsao’s publisher and editors issued an apology for their writer’s column. In their letter, the Asia City Publishing Group in Hong Kong apologized “unreservedly for any offense that may have been caused by Chip Tsao's column dated March 27".

HK Magazine explained that they have long been championing the rights of Filipinos working in Hong Kong.

"We note that Filipinos have often been unfairly treated in Hong Kong, and that they make an important contribution to this community," said HK Magazine

It all stems back to political squabbling, Glacier.

This Tsao represents a group of Chinese who have and harbor similar feelings regarding the Philippines. They show disinterest and debauchery towards our numerous presence in their urban centers working as domestic helpers or hired hands or engineers or teachers etc. Yet at the same time, they take insult to the fact that the country of the The Philippines maintains a solid and staunch claim over the Kalayaan group and said parcels in the Spratley's.

The Chinese government and the Chinese people, if you analyze their history and their internal and external intrigue, will notice that the Chinese people implement a sense of xenophobia against those that are foreign to the Han Race (Chinese). It is a concept of filial piety that is characteristic of the Confucian Culture that is alive in the Chinese psyche. For thousands of years, the Chinese dynasties (Tang, Ming, Han, Qing, Song, Yuan etc) received tributes from its lesser neighbors, per se Siam (Thailand), Nguyen Dynasty (Vietnam), Khmer Empire (Cambodia), Koguryo Empire (Korea), Tokugawa Japan, Bali, Sri Vijaya (Malay) and even from Hindu Kingdoms of the past.

It is an intrinsic character of the Chinese people of superiority towards their lesser neighbors. The name of China bears witness and manifests this intrigue. In Mandarin, "China" is known as 'Zhong Guo" which literally means, "Land Under Heaven" or colloquially, "Middle Kingdom". The land between heaven and earth.

That aspect of their psyche lives on today. And the fact that the Philippines and the Filipino are so staunch in claiming territorial integrity despite the fact that thousands of Filipinos are working in China is almost like a slap to the face for some Chinese nationalists and die hard right wingers.

To better understand one's opponent, we must understand the way they think.

Remember that.

;)

Remember that.

;)

i watched not too long ago Bruce Lee's movie Fist of Fury. He got so mad after the Japanese called the Chinese "Sick Man of Asia". Of course, after some astonishing martial art combat, the Japanese ended up eating the piece of paper unto which the taunt was painted. It was a great show and analogy of Chinese muscle flexing.

After much ridicule from more powerful nations before, China, The Sleeping Giant, has awakened and tried to prove, it is no longer a Sick Man of Asia. Is this present action of some "patriotic"/idiotic Chinese in HK  and the Chinese government over the Spratlys the ala-Bruce-Lee form of revenge against those who once called them as sick nation? Maybe. So, flexing its muscle against its tiny neighbor like Philippines is the best way to stage its comeback. However they feel our slapping on their faces, it's only a tiny slap. No big deal. Their hardened faces are seasoned for that.

Now they may want to strike us with a hammer, but they can't. Because...

Still, i like to imagine Philippines is like Jerry Mouse chased by Tom Cat (Chinese) and just when Tom cornered the tiny but smart "devil", Tom couldn't make the blow because Bull Dog (USA) is there behind the mouse.

HK Magazine columnist Chip Tsao personally apologized to Filipino officials in Hong Kong after causing a stir with his article where he called the Philippines a “nation of servants.”

According to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesman Eduardo Malaya, Tsao conveyed his “most sincere apologies for the offense he had caused” to Philippine consulate officials and Filipino community leaders Wednesday night at the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong.

The controversial columnist also made a public apology on television in China’s Special Administrative Region.

The DFA confirmed to abs-cbnNEWS.com in a text message that it received information about Tsao’s apology from a report by the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong.

“The following is excerpt of Mr. Chip Tsao's interview aired 7 p.m. last night at ATV, a major local TV channel: ‘I realized that I had crossed the line...I now offer my public apology,’” the DFA stated in the text message.

Malacañang, however, is still unsure if it would accept Tsao’s apology.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita also said Wednesday that he is not certain if the Bureau of Immigration (BI) would remove Tsao from its blacklist after his apology.

In his March 27 article entitled “The War at Home,” Tsao called the Philippines a “nation of servants” not worthy of claiming the Spratly Islands from China, as the country employs hundreds of thousands of Filipino domestic helpers on very low wages.

Such comment caused a backlash among Filipinos, which prompted BI Commissioner Marcelino Libanan to place Tsao in the immigration blacklist for being an undesirable alien.

“This is our manifestation of disgust against the racial slur and insult committed by Mr. Tsao against us as a people,” Libanan said after announcing the issuance of the blacklist order.

On Monday, HK Magazine’s publisher Asia City Publishing Group issued an apology “for any offense that may have been caused by Chip Tsao's column date March 27.”

Look at how you guys reply to comments such as these? (TAAS BASA JYUD!)

Your comments are very long as if it is taken personal.

Do not forget a mayor once saying not long ago that foreigners coming here are basically engaging in loose lifestyles.

how cheap and underminding of him especailly when he did not know the one who he had intended it for, and the overall insinuation is that Mayor Lim thawrted his wrong ideals of Foreigners not just at a dead victim but to his greiving family, freinds and fellow foreignewrs coming here.

Spend more energy trying to better the present environment not always spending energy on fighting about what someone has said about the country as a whole or do not take it so personal if it is not true.

People critisize other counteries all the time he is a columnist and he has a right to freedom of speech, the press and his opinion.

I could think of more worse things he could of said.

Maybe he was not meaning it as an insult, maybe it is meant as you people are hard working in what you do.

Dedicated workers when you get into your work.

I would think something positive. I have not read the column yet.

Maybe his Englis is limited? ha ha ha!

Maybe he realizes his ussage of words is not good.

Think of all the people who call me straight out fat in the states that is considerered very rude if I had struck a pop in all the peoples faces who say that here the hospitals would be kept very busy here.

If you do not like what was said look into why he said it and try to help make the sittuation better.

s*** happens now it's time to turn my cheek and look the other way and pretend this did not happen with this columnist and laugh since this what I have learned how people handle negative things here.

Just some freindlu advice...Do not make things inot a bigger issue then it isor should be.

You guys like American culture so much then learn to shrug it off!

Like oh well!

Be as if what was said did not bother you guys because you know what is right.

Maybe America should become sensitive as this country and start sending home everyone who has said a bad word about them?

Move on

Be proud not angry :)

They say the truth always hurts!

What I mean by that is show people who are mean and insulting the opposite prove them wrong let them be insulted mnot you.

Here in Philippines I am so funny I make everyone laugh because laughter feels so good all over and its music to the ears.

People insult the states always we are not blacklisting them because in states we are free to speak and say what we want just so long as there are no threats.

I thought Filipines was a democratic?

I have noticed the guy even said sorry, true christians would forgive and forget and move on.

As much as the Chinese like to flex their muscles on the small Philippines, it cannot.

So it has to result in vocal harrassment. Because She knows that The United States and its ever-watching eyes has strategic interest in the stability of the Philippines. A stable Philippines is good for American strategic interests.

China will not touch Philippines. And its threats remains empty and dull.

This is why:

I am an American first and foremost, but by blood and culture I am linked to my Philippine Fatherland.

I swear no fealty nor no loyalty to the Chinese nor do I see them as greater than the Filipinos.

The Filipino people is a proud mix of people. We are a MALAY people, of the Great Malay Race. Sure we may have a springkling of Spanish, Chinese, American and even Japanese blood here and there.

But as a whole, we are a FILIPINO people. A proud and a majestic RACE.

I do not bow before any Chinese.

You shouldn't have been shy, Mr. Zosimo.
My Lola nating was a loving and beautiful soul. Very kind and loving. :)
Wealth means nothing, Mr. Zosimi, the most important is the character of an individual, the character which we gain by hard work and struggles.

Through Christ Our Lord, gives us the ability to accomplish and make into action thoughts.
Am sure Lola would have liked you, as I like you. You are a kind and admirable soul. :)

God Bless,

Back to the subject matter.

It is important to stress the unifying factor, our Filipino character. The term Filipino is but the outer covering; a people that is a mixture of different races and ethnicities. Originally, it was the Malay, then the migration of some Chinese, some Indian, Arabs, then the Spanish, then the Americans, the Japanese and other peoples.

Think about it like a marble cake. Stratification is observed. It is the stratified layers that, ultimately, make up the individual. The nationality. And that nationality is Filipno.

So, ultimately, and transcendentally, it matters not if we may have Spanish, or Chinese, or Japanese, or English, or Indian blood. Because in the end, the identity is: FILIPNO.

Cheers,

Philippines a nation of servants? You could take this in a positive way you know... like what's said in the Bible "he who serves will be greatest in the Kingdom of heaven." As a Christian nation we take pride in being called "servants" for many of us are... we serve God and we serve for the common good. I would take exception of course those who have become engrossed with filling their own pockets  and self-serving - but we still have a number who have character, the so-called seed that fell on good ground... the small mustard seed that's prophesied to grow into the biggest of shrubs where birds of the air can rest and make their nests... with the appearance of hope against hope, but nonetheless a little glim of light warm enough to sustain us during the cold winter. I think our reactions to this tag circle around the ego-thingy! That's my personal perception. Or if my thoughts are counter-cultural enough for some more bloody-reactions, then let's prove otherwise that we're not!

I think our reactions to this tag circle around the ego-thingy! That's my personal perception. Or if my thoughts are counter-cultural enough for some more bloody-reactions, then let's prove otherwise that we're not!

"You don't flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter," Tsao said.

This Tsao should be taught my mother-in-law's wisdom that neither should a master be too arrogant to twist your servant's muscles, she who slaves to prepare your bread and butter on the breakfast table, because you'll never know what she'll put in there to get back at you... (Kana bang secret ingredients nga wa sa recipe)

Nong, dire kay kuhaon naman daan ang tip! Didto mi sa L.A., gidugangan na nila'g 20% tip kay upat mi kabuok.  Same thing when we went to SF last week, 20% na ilang gidugang for tip.

Dire, automatic man mi mohatag ug 15% tip kon dili group.

Lisod na ra ba mangitag katabang ron nga kugihan ug tarong. Busa kung naa kay maayong katabang, treat her well or be ready to help yourself. Ngano bitaw bisag kanang kusog mangbiay-biay sa kaugalingon katabang apil-apil pud ug kondenar ni Tsao. We should also ask ourselves if we treat our own domestic helpers any better.

Korek, Bene san.  I know some people na gailahi nila ilang helpers ug pagkaon and they are treated unfairly.  I want to believe I am especially kind to domestic helpers.  My mother was my father's family's househelper and I knew she was treated well too.

Amen ko ana. In fact, kung mosunod tas maayong panultion, kung ako pay mo litok ani, "I could care less what others think or say about me (sakit gehapon god hahaha). Truth is, I don't live my life for others." Selfish at first glance 'guro, but really, before we could even start living our lives for others, unahon sa nato atong kaugalingon ug pagpahilona. Mao nay giingon, "tan-aw lang mo." Ang that's what most people tend to do. They love watching other people's lives. Mao na nga di makalikay ang mang husga hehehe.

In his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey reiterated what Christ had been saying all along: "You want to be understood, try to understand..." Our perceptions (pre-conceived judgments) is what usually make us put our feet where our mouth is!

If only Mr Chip Tsao knew the history of the Chinese here in the Philippines.

If only he had knew that the Chinese beg to President Manuel Quezon for the Americans to recognize them. Because they were banned in the USA since 1882.

If he had only knew that the Chinese beg to President Ferdinand Marcos for them to become Filipino Citizens (1974).

But, we were Filipinos. We are in service to humanity, a help to mankind. That still he did not know.

Maybe this is the thread I could put this on. Got this today from the email networks:

Subject: A DAY WITHOUT PINOYS!!!!

A day without Filipinos :

Let's imagine then, not just California, but the entire world, waking up
one day to discover Filipinos have disappeared. I'm talking here about the
six or seven million Filipinos currently working overseas in countries with
names that run the entire alphabet, from Angola to Zimbabwe.
Let's not worry first about why or how the Filipinos disappeared; in fact,
it becomes academic whether it's a day or a week. Just imagine a world
without Filipinos.

Think of the homes that are dependent on Filipino housekeepers, nannies,
caregivers. The homes would be chaotic as kids cry out for their nannies.
Hong Kong and Singaporean and Taiwanese yuppie couples are now forced to
stay home and realizing, goodness, there's so much of housework that has to
be handled and how demanding their kids can be and hey, what's this strange
language they're babbling in?

It's not just the children that are affected. The problems are even more
serious with the elderly in homes and nursing institutions, because
Filipino caregivers have provided so much of the critical services they
need. When temporary contractual workers are brought in from among
non-Filipinos, the elderly complain.. They want their Filipino caregivers
back because they have that special touch, that extra patience and
willingness to stay an hour more when needed.

Hospitals, too, are adversely affected because so many of the disappeared
Filipinos were physicians, nurses and other health professionals. All
appointments for rehabilitation services, from children with speech
problems to stroke survivors, are indefinitely postponed because of
disappeared speech pathologists, occupational and physical therapists! .
Eventually, the hospital administrators announce they won't take in any
more patients unless the conditions are serious. Patients are told to
follow their doctors' written orders and, if they have questions, to seek
advice on several Internet medical sites. But within two days, the hospitals
are swamped with new complaints. The websites aren't working because
of missing Filipino web designers and website managers.

Service establishments throughout the world - restaurants, supermarkets,
hotels - all close down because of their missing key staff involved in
management and maintenance. In Asia, hotels complain about the missing
bands and singers.

In the United States, many commercial establishments have to close shop,
not just because of the missing Filipino sales staff but because their
suppliers have all been sending in notices about delays in shipments.  Yup,
the shipping industry has gone into a crisis because of missing Filipino
seafarers.

The shipping firms begin to look into the emergency recruitment of
non-Filipino seafarers but then declare another crisis: They're running out
of supplies of oil for their ships because the Middle Eastern countries
have come to a standstill without their Filipino workers, including quite a
few working for the oil industry.

Frantic presidents and prime ministers call on the United Nations to
convene a special session of the Security Council but Kofi Annan says he
can't do that because the UN system itself is on the edge, with so many of
their secretarial and clerical staff, as well as translators, having
disappeared from their main headquarters in New York and Geneva, as well as
their regional offices throughout the world. Quite a number of UN services,
especially refugee camps, are also in danger of closing down because of
missing Filipino health professionals and teachers.

Annan also explains that he can't convene UN meetings because the airports
in New York, Washington and other major US cities have been shut down.  The
reason? The disappeared Filipinos included quite a few airport security
personnel who used to check passengers and their baggage.

Annan calls on the World Bank and international private foundations for
assistance but they're crippled, too, because their Filipino consultants
and staff are nowhere to be seen. Funds can't be remitted and projects
can't run without the technical assistance provided for by Filipinos.

An exasperated Annan calls on religious leaders to pray, and pray hard.
But when he phones the Pope, he is told the Catholic Church, too, is in
crisis because the disappeared include the many Filipino priests and nuns
in Rome who help run day-to-day activities, as well as missionaries in the
frontlines of remote posts, often the only ones providing basic social
services.

As they converse, Annan and the Pope agree on one thing: the world has
become a quieter place since the Filipinos disappeared. It isn't just the
silencing of work and office equipment formerly handled by Filipinos; no,
it seems there's much less laughter now that the Filipinos aren't around,
both the laughter of the Filipinos and those they served.

I know, I know, I'm exaggerating the contributions of Filipinos to the
world but I'm doing what the producers of "A Day Without Mexicans" had in
mind: using a bit of hyperbole to shake people up.

As their blurb for the film goes: "How do you make the invisible, visible?
Make them invisible."

As I wrote this column, I did realize I was doing this not so much for the
Hong Kong Chinese and Taiwanese and Singaporeans and Americans who don't
appreciate us enough, than for us, who as Filipinos, are pretty good at
putting ourselves down, at making ourselves invisible.

Fr. Jess E. Briones, SVD
Superior Delegatus Argentina
